Description
This property is no longer available to rent or to buy. This description is from December 15, 2021
Completely innovative in every sense, this architecturally unique, environmentally green condo was built in 2003 by award-winning Berkeley architects Leger Wanaselja. Originally an early 20th-century grocery store that had fallen into disrepair, the site now houses 2 buildings constructed with salvaged & environmentally sustainable, energy-efficient materials all in a dramatic, contemporary design. This striking, light-filled condo is one of only 9 on-site & offers an open great room (LR/DR/kitchen), 2BR, 1.5BA, a private outdoor deck & a deeded parking spot. Architectural details used in a contemporary design include recycled & repurposed materials, including recycled glass kitchen counters, concrete floors & salvaged wood reused for doors and window trim. This incredible central Berkeley location is just blocks to Shattuck Ave shops/restaurants, and close to downtown Berkeley, the Cal campus & Berkeley HS. 9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe Principal has been very receptive and always available to discuss our concerns. I visit the school at different times of the day throughout the year and I see his presence in the lunch room on the yard and in the school as a strong and positive influence on the school , it's students and the teaching staff. The PTA is involved and the school supports may different initiatives on behalf of BAM and the community.Parent Review5y ago - Berkeley High School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIf you’re interested in a Wolk environment, that places social issues above education, this is the place for you. It caters to the lowest common denominator at the expense of serious students. If you’re a self-starter and seriously motivated student, you might survive. It can offer a quality education, but those opportunities diminish year-by-year as political agenda takes hold. There is little to no repercussions for violent behavior.Parent Review1y ago - Sylvia Mendez Elementary

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePhenomenal school is every way. Diverse and welcome in learning community with high quality teachers in TK and K. My student has thrived here and I can’t wait to see what next school year brings. The after school staff really connected with my student and principal Hunt is a very dedicated. Don’t skip the potluck and movie nights as well as other school functions like back to school etc. they are so so worth it. Forgot to mention one of the best aspects, the specialists! My student has dance, garden, nutrition/ wellness, and art!Parent Review1y ago - Oxford Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI had two kids in this school. One of them was severely traumatized, the other one fared better but was also not really happy. They have ZERO help for kids during recess. When there is a fight kids are told off, when there is bullying they rather victim blame than helping the child. The principal is old fashioned and loves teachers that yell at and punish kids. Group punishments? Great! Shaming a kid as punishment? Yes!The school has a few fantastic teachers but it doesn't make up for the rest.Parent Review2y ago - Washington Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWashington is an excellent school academically and offers tons of enrichment classes like science, gardening, art, music, and library each week. What's so special about the school is that it has the strongest community out of any of the other Berkeley public schools. Each teacher is skilled and cares about the wellbeing of the children. It also has an amazing playground with its own forest. If your child gets into Washington, consider yourself lucky!Parent Review7mo ago - Cragmont Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNine out of ten. The school was built In 1999 with seismic Proofing also Ng with great surveillance cameras and security. The PTA is absolutely wonderful and we as parents have been participating and engaged. Parents are educated and great to hang out with. The teaching skills are very acceptable. I really like the melting pot of the students along with the teachers.Parent Review4y ago - Willard Middle School

"This is a fairly quiet street, with some foot and car traffic since it connects to Sacramento Street and University Ave. But it's much more neighborhood-oriented than it seems, and close to daycare/dog park/cafe/bakery."
- mysolosusan

"I live almost on the corner of Bancroft and Roosevelt, and have lived in central Berkeley for two straight decades now. It's a great neighborhood - I see there's supposed to be a bit higher crime not far from here, but in all these years I've seen only one crime - a mugging wherein a Berkeley high graduate about 19 years old, tried to steal an earbud for a cell phone from a high school girl. He didn't get the earbud and the police caught him and a couple others with the minimum of fuss. That's it, although I've heard of a couple other small crimes more toward university. To live here is to feel very safe, and really be in walking distance to UC, and all kinds of shops, restaurants and so on. The little tot parks are real nice, especially the one on Roosevelt, and walking is very enjoyable due to all the lovely landscaping done in this area around private homes. Neighbors are great. I love living here except for having to get a parking permit - which is cheap and easy to do really."
