Originally called “Uptown,” the neighborhood became known as Shaw after a local school was named for Civil War Colonel Robert Shaw.

Howard University was founded here in 1867, and Shaw became a major center of African American intellectual and cultural life.

The area’s population declined in the 1960s and ’70s, but there’s been an influx of new residents and businesses in recent years.

Shaw’s central location, Metro stations, historic architecture, and thriving culture have made it a popular neighborhood.

The Green and Yellow lines have three Metro stops here: Shaw-Howard University Station, U Street Station, and Mount Vernon Square Station.
