Lowry Field is a neighborhood on the far eastern edge of Denver that was built on a former air force base.
This large parcel of land about six miles from downtown became available when the base closed in 1994.
Now it’s a master planned neighborhood that combines residential streets, dining, businesses, nonprofits, and schools.
Where the base’s administrative offices once stood, Lowry Town Center now offers shopping, restaurants, offices, and gyms.
Several military buildings have been repurposed as everything from lofts and condos to an adult ed program and a theater.
Two enormous hangars also remain, one of which holds a museum that chronicles the history of the base.
A rocketship originally created for Burning Man now tops an ice cream stand.
