Two miles southwest of downtown, Cheesman Park is a neighborhood that’s named for its large city park.

This is one of Denver’s oldest areas, dating back to 1868.

The neighborhood was initially centered around a cemetery, but in 1907 it was transformed into the 80-acre Cheesman Park.

After the park’s debut, some of the city’s wealthiest residents built mansions here.

Three historic districts preserve Cheesman Park homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Since the 1930s, the construction of apartment buildings has made the neighborhood denser.

These include some historic brick buildings.

There are now many high- and mid-rise apartment and condo buildings surrounding the park.

The Denver Botanic Gardens have themed gardens, a conservatory, and an amphitheater that hosts summer concerts.

West of the gardens is Cheesman Park, named for Denver pioneer Walter Cheesman, whose family paid for the park’s neoclassical pavilion.

This is the center of Denver’s LGBT community and home of the annual PrideFest parade and AIDS Walk.

There’s no light rail station in the neighborhood, but several bus lines pass through.

Cheesman Park also has four bike-share stations and designated bike lanes, including a protected lane on 11th Avenue.
