Bayview is on a hill between San Francisco Bay and Highway 101 in the southeastern part of the city.

It’s about six miles south of downtown San Francisco and eight miles north of the airport.

Locals often refer to Bayview in the same breath as neighboring Hunters Point, combining the two into “Bayview–Hunters Point.”

Bayview has mostly single-family homes, but recently higher-end apartment complexes have also been built.

The neighborhood’s main commercial and transportation artery is Third Street.

Community activists organize neighborhood improvements and support community gardens.

The city has also done redevelopment projects in the neighborhood, including a revamp of Gilman Playground.

A Muni light rail line along 3rd Street has replaced an aging bus line and improved Bayview’s connection to the rest of the city.

The neighborhood has two large parks, including Candlestick Point, where the SF Giants and the 49ers used to play.

Shipbuilding and shipping have played a big role in this part of the city. In 1867 the first drydock on the Pacific coast was built nearby.
