La Jolla is a San Diego neighborhood 12 miles north of downtown.

It’s on the coast north of Pacific Beach and south of Del Mar and is surrounded on three sides by bluffs and beaches.

La Jolla’s compact downtown, often called the Village, is filled with boutiques, restaurants, and hotels.

La Jolla was once an art colony, and it still has an array of fine-art galleries.

Some historic homes are an easy walk from the Village.

Other homes are in gated communities or high on the hill.

North of downtown, La Jolla Shores’ mile-long stretch of sand is a popular place to boogie board and swim.

UC San Diego’s campus is at the northern end of La Jolla, drawing tens of thousands of students to the area.
