Extremely concerning failures in basic safety, supervision, communication, and student privacy. My experience with this school has raised serious concerns that go far beyond normal school frustrations. There was no verification of identity when picking up my child, and there was no ID check required to enter the school. When you’re responsible for children, those should be basic security measures—not optional procedures.Poison Control was contacted twice regarding incidents involving my child, yet I was only informed about one of those calls. Parents should not have to find out after the fact that an incident involving their child was serious enough to warrant contacting Poison Control. My child was also made to sleep on the floor because staff reportedly said they had “no extra nap mats.” Regardless of the explanation, that is not an acceptable solution for a child’s sleeping arrangement. Then came perhaps the most alarming incident of all. When I arrived to obtain my child’s withdrawal paperwork, I was handed a document that was already signed—and it wasn’t even the correct student’s paperwork. The document contained another student’s personal information. A school should have safeguards in place to ensure that confidential student records are given only to the correct parent or guardian. Handing me another child’s paperwork, complete with their personal information, is a serious privacy and administrative failure.Taken individually, each of these situations would be concerning. Taken together, they demonstrate a disturbing pattern of failures in child safety, supervision, communication, security, and confidentiality.Parents entrust schools with their children and with their most sensitive personal information. At an absolute minimum, parents should be able to expect that the school knows who is picking up their child, who is entering the building, what happens to their child during the school day, when significant incidents occur, and whose private records they are handing out.
