FM 1950 #9, Chilton, TX 76632

I like that it's a sm school & teachers really get to know the students. I think that some of the administration, especially the super (he's been giving water to texans without water after the ice storm), cares about the community & tries to help students & parents in hard times. I have 2 major issues with this school. The 1st issue is there is favoritism. The principal & a lot of teachers go easier on kids that play sports. My daughter plays sports & she will get off easier than my niece who doesn't. I'm just calling it like it is. If your kid doesn't play a sport then your kid is not important at Chilton. But the biggest issue I have is that Chilton is not academically rigorous at all. A student can do absolutely nothing & never show up to school & he'll still get a 50. There's a kid in my daughter's class who hasn't been to school all 6 weeks & got a 50 on his report card. My daughter missed an assignment while she was out for an appointment. I told her that she'd get a 0 and that'd be a good lesson for get in responsibility & she tells me that she'd get a 50 because they can't go lower than that. I make her do the assignment anyways & she got a 70. She might as well had sat on her hands & got the 50 because it wouldn't have changed her overall grade much. There are classes where the students play on their phone, play games that have nothing to do with class, & just "chill." My daughter only has 2 classes where she actually does real work, her science and math classes. If I check her phone she has spent all day texting & looking at the internet. I took her phone & learn from her friends that now she doesn't have anything to do because they have "chill" classes where students don't do work. In just 4 years she'll be in college & will not be prepared. I wanted her to take avid to prepare for college because I didn't go to college & wasn't sure what all she needed to know. Then her avid teacher is telling them they don't need college. If you need a babysitter & your kid just needs a high school diploma, then Chilton is a good fit. If your dreams are bigger than that for your kid, then you need to supplement with private tutoring or something. I can't afford to do that so I'm going to vote for a school board that cares about pushing ALL the kids in all subjects or move to another district.
