this school is awsome . not good at all it trash

1. Outdated and Overly Strict School RulesThe phone policy is one of the worst. During an assembly, administrators claimed it exists to help us “focus” and protect our “mental health.” They also said that in an emergency, students contacting the outside world could “overload phone lines.” The rule is extreme: phones must stay powered off and locked in lockers from bell to bell. Why not create a smarter system like silent mode or designated check-in times instead of treating every student like a criminal? Forcing kids to surrender their devices entirely feels designed to push students toward dropping out and make the environment as hostile as possible.The no-hoods rule is equally ridiculous. On a freezing day in class, I put my hood up for warmth and was immediately sent for detention. Staff seem more obsessed with catching rule-breakers than actually teaching.The flag policy in the handbook is outright discriminatory. It explicitly states that only the U.S. flag and Michigan state flag are permitted. No Chinese, French, Mexican, or any other national flag is allowed. That sends a clear message about whose identity matters.Even the “no phone in pocket” clause is absurd if staff spot a bulge that might be a phone, the device is confiscated on the spot and taken to the office.2. “100% Bully-Free Zone” A Complete LieThe school proudly advertises itself as a “100% bully-free zone.” That claim is laughable. I’ve witnessed and personally experienced bullying on multiple occasions. When teachers or staff see it, they often look the other way or do nothing. The slogan is just empty marketing.3. Staff Hypocrisy and FavoritismStaff routinely break the very rules they enforce on students. I’ve seen teachers scrolling on phones, wearing hoods, and acting more immature than the kids. False accusations fly constantly; I’ve been blamed for things I didn’t do, and I know I’m not alone. Meanwhile, certain students get a free pass pure favoritism. When the adults can’t follow their own policies, why should anyone respect them?

We have just moved to the West Branch area from near Detroit MI. My son attends Surline Elementary and has never been happier to go to school. I see such a change in him and after school he says he misses school. They are doing something right! He has daily homework which I believe is great because it keeps him on his toes. The staff is very friendly and helpful, I have no problems with this school and I am glad we moved to West Branch!
