5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy concern is the bullying, especially by other students as well as unqualified teachers and aides who are not equipped to properly handle the special needs student.I served as a school crossing guard for eight years after I retired, and it was always the special needs child that was made fun of, and bullied. Schools need to protect these special students. It can't happen a minute too soon.Wilma LewisI hope this is at the top of the agenda.Other Review10y ago3 Reviews - Anuenue School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageKea’au Elementary School is a shining example of what a nurturing and high-achieving educational environment should look like. From the moment you step onto the campus, it's clear that this school prioritizes excellence while genuinely caring for each student’s well-being.Under the leadership of Principal Tanabe and Vice Principal Tau, the school has cultivated a warm and inclusive atmosphere that encourages students to strive for their best. Both administrators are dedicated to fostering an environment where learning flourishes, and their commitment to education is evident in every aspect of the school. They support their staff and advocate for resources that enhance the learning experience, all while emphasizing the importance of safety and security.Speaking of safety, Mr. Alton stands out as an exemplary figure in ensuring that students feel secure while on campus. His vigilant presence and proactive measures make parents feel at ease, knowing their children are in good hands. It’s reassuring to have someone so dedicated to the safety of the students.Another highlight of Kea’au Elementary is Mr. Peercy, whose upbeat personality and genuine interest in every child's success create a welcoming environment during pick-up time. It’s impressive how he knows every child’s name and can often be heard sharing a personal greeting with both students and their parents. This level of connection fosters a strong sense of community and belonging which is invaluable in a school setting. The educators at Kea’au Elementary are true professionals who not only aim to excel academically but also strive to connect with students on a personal level. They care deeply about their students, investing time and energy into helping each child reach their full potential. These teachers deserve recognition and commendation for their hard work, and it is clear that they should be compensated more for the vital roles they play in shaping young minds. In summary, Kea’au Elementary School is a fantastic place for children to grow and learn. With a commitment to excellence, a strong focus on safety, and a staff that truly cares, this school stands out as a community gem. If you're looking for a nurturing and dedicated environment for your child, Kea’au Elementary is the perfect choice!Parent Review1y ago5 Reviews - Keaau High School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWhile I am grateful to have graduated from high school, I can't say I'm proud to have graduated from this one. My experience at Keaau High involved frequent exposure to schoolyard brawls, administrative apathy, and laughable courses.I took a woodworks class in which the teacher was so lenient that we spent most of the time cleaning the woodshop, and I learned nothing from that class. I once got harassed by that class' students so severely that I transferred to an art class.I remember how defiant students smeared the bathroom walls with graffiti, and I can't recall the school ever removing the unsightly "art." Not to mention that the school cranked the AC to an intensely high level.I liked a few teachers at that school, a couple of whom I still contact from time to time. But most teachers at the time were either too ineffective or too indifferent for me to remember fondly.Primarily, I felt like Keaau High didn't challenge its students enough and didn't do enough to allow students to be more pro-social.Given that my experience was back in the 00s, a lot has likely changed. I sure hope so, because I wouldn't want a child going to that school if it is still anything like it was back then!Parent Review3y ago5 Reviews - Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino

"There are a lot of dogs that get out of their gates and this could be an issue if someone is walking or jogging through the neighborhood "

"I love the friendly atmosphere and lovely environment. I would like to see more local businesses with a strong community presence, and bigger retailers supporting those local businesses. Hilo is a town that's filled with loving people that are incredibly family oriented. Families are busy but that doesn't mean they aren't always willing to help out a stranger."

"The community is good. It’s fairly safe. The dogs in this area need to be chained. Many people have gotten hurt. But! I really love how big each property is and how quiet and peaceful it is. I love the privacy and how each individual has their own space."

"Plenty place for the dogs to play and run. However other people don’t put their dogs on leashes and just let them roam freely. Other wise it is a awesome place to live and have animals."

"There are lots of dogs; many of which are not chained up and can be quite vicious. On paved roads, people drive quickly and sometimes recklessly. "

"Lots of traffic. Public schools are not that great. Traffic is so bad during the school year because parents choose to drive their kids to better school districts. "

"Quiet, away from the city, private. Friendly neighbors. Dog friendly. Gravel roads. Close to the volcanic eruption to see its beauty, but far enough that it is not affected."
