Description

“Captain’s Corner” presents a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity. This spectacular Gold Coast Queen Anne Victorian designed and built by Joseph A. Leonard, sits in the heart of Alameda’s desirable Leonardville Heritage location on “Captain’s Row,” only two homes from the lagoon on a quiet tree-lined street with other stately historic homes. The home has been featured on HGTV, in books, paintings, and historic tours.
Exquisitely and tastefully restored by the current owners from foundation to roof, the home invites you to a gracious entrance with coffered redwood ceilings and hardwood floors. The foyer flows into the main floor rooms featuring beautiful quarter-sawn curly redwood door and window trims. Natural light floods the house through the many tall windows. The living room’s two sets of pocket doors offer privacy, without compromising the open floor concept to the adjoining family, and dining rooms. Many of the ornate ceiling rosettes were hand-painted by Smithsonian artist, Mimi Stuart.
The main kitchen features a six-burner Heartland gas range and oven, large sink, disposal, refrigerator, and plenty of storage in the handsome Pulaski designed cupboards and open shelving. The pantry kitchen adjacent to the main kitchen and dining room features stunning custom-built mahogany lower cabinets forming two deep-toned marble-topped peninsulas that open into the dining room. The mahogany uppers with glass doors offer an abundance of storage for fine glassware. The large sink, disposal, and smooth-top electric oven range and dishwasher work perfectly as a bar, warming and serving area for family and guests who love to be in the kitchen with their hosts.
5,429 Square feet gives you room to breathe. The main house spans into 6 spacious bedrooms, 2 baths, 3 washrooms, natural hardwood, and imported marble floors. Tall ceilings throughout. Room for exercise or office.
From the kitchen, you can walk down a few steps to a large private fenced back yard with bricked patio with mature avocado, citrus, and apple trees, for BBQ and dining al fresco. On the other side of the organic garden you can pick fresh vegetables, peppers, tomatoes, and herbs.
The new owner can enjoy this magnificent home as a single-family residence with ample room for a home office, gym, entertainment center and guest rooms on the ground floor, or rent out the ground floor as a fully functional two-bedroom apartment with a separate entrance. No structural changes required.
Modern appliances include a front load washer/dryer.
GROUND FLOOR APARTMENT, AKA “Captain’s Quarters:”
This 1700 Square foot renovated ground floor apartment with private entrance, offers 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, walk-in closet, lots of windows for sun-filled natural light. Marble floors grace the entryway and dining room. Tiled Kitchen floor and Berber carpeting throughout. Ample storage for plates and glassware with large custom cabinets with internal lighting. Kitchen with modern gas range/oven, refrigerator and dishwasher. Spacious living room with ornamental fireplace. Additional space for an office with enough room for exercise. Separate laundry room with modern washer & dryer. Fenced back yard with bricked patio.
Off-street parking

"Lovely architecture to admire while walking the dog. Nearby parks and beaches are only 6 blocks away. Downside is that dogs aren’t allowed on the sand but you can walk on the sidewalks overlooking the water. Hardly any traffic so the streets are quiet. People with dogs give other dogs lots of space. Rare to see dog waste not cleaned up-though it happens. "
  • Trulia User
"sensor lights should be place on all areas of your house to deter anyone from coming if they are not invited to visit. and a alarm if they are to close to the house or apt."
  • Trulia User
"There are many people walking their dogs in the neighborhood. There are also 2 off leash dog parks on the island. "
  • Ali L.
"I feel safe walking my dogs at any time of the day or night. There are lots of dogs but owners are respectful."
  • Hvlaity
"Very easy to commute to work in Oakland and drive to San Francisco on the weekends. Also easy to grab groceries and run errands in the area "
  • Hyejin
"I meet several dog owners everyday when I walked with kids. They are happy to walk with dogs and smile at me and greeting friendly "
  • Susan K.
"20 minutes into the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland - morning commute. Evening commute can be 35 minutes."
  • Trulia User
"I am not sure what to say here. I moved here in March 2019 and I am so happy living in such a place. I love that I can walk to the beach, and walk along the bay and see San Francisco in the distance."
  • Courtney G.
" This neighborhood has parks and schools within walking distances. I often see parents walking with their kids"
  • Tanita M.
"I’ve only been living here for a month now and I’m very happy about the walkability around here. I’ve been living in Tx for the past 5 years living in the burbs right outside Houston where there’s no public transportation, sidewalks, bike lanes etc. Tx isn’t pedestrian friendly at all so it’s good being back in CA."
  • Trulia User
"Friendly: older neighbors are welcoming to younger owners moving in. Slowly gentrifying (younger generation Alameda born are moving out). Lots of younger renters (30-40) too."
  • Orange Crow
"It’s awesome! I live right on a lagoon and I have a kayak I take out on it. The beach is 3 blocks and Park St is a 15 min walk. Super safe and neighborhood is friendly. Flat and great for biking and running. Traffic is better here than most places in Bay. I take a ferry to SF for work which is a wonderful way to commute. Love it!"
  • Markvasquez95
"it's a busy street that connects to everything . i can easily get to where i wanna get to on the bus and the neighborhood is very quiet. "
  • Cceres
"Life slows down once you cross the Alameda town line. Community feel and only a ferry ride away from San Francisco. "
  • Patrice A.
"Alameda is a family friendly city that does not like speeders. We have great food and people don't like to leave the island u less they must. it was beautiful bike paths."
  • Feliciasmoore
"I've lived in this neighborhood for 9 years. The area is quiet and clean. There is a regular police presence. Rent is very high though."
  • Guy B.
"Alameda's close proximity to San Francisco makes it convenient to Silicon Valley too, but at a fraction of the price. Super cute older homes and a close knit neighborhood feel is felt throughout the island. We don't have cross traffic being an island which gives us an identity like no other city in the entire San Francisco metropolitan area. As for the city itself, Alameda is safe, has good schools, is charming quaint, and quiet with plenty of shops, restaurants, movie theatre, walking and bike trails. I've lived all over the bay area and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but Alameda."
  • William
"I OWN A PLACE AROUND THE COURNER SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS ARE LOOKING TO BUY HERE. LIVE IN ONE UNIT WHILE RENTING THE OTHERS. WE HAVE COFFE SHOPS, SMALL GROCERIE STORE, MOVIE THEATER, RESTRAUNT'S, ALAMEDA MUSEUM, PUBLIC TENNIS COURT'S ALL WITH IN A SHORT WALKING DISTANCE "
