A Century on Beach Road. Some houses are just houses. This one is a survivor! Built in 1920 — more than a century ago — this home rose at the very peak of Taylor County's timber empire, when Perry was world-famous for forest products. Just six years earlier, Burton-Swartz had built the world's largest cypress sawmill near Perry, and the logging camp at Carbur had grown into the largest logging camp on earth. The railroads that carried it all ran right through Perry. This home was built for the working families who powered all of it — a classic North Florida mill-era cottage, heated by its hearth. 1920 was also the year Florida's great land boom began. And Beach Road — the historic country road this home sits on — was the wagon-and-auto route winding 18 miles south through the pine flatwoods to the Gulf, ending at a tiny fishing settlement called Keaton Beach. In the early 1920s, Captain W. Alston Brown was developing Keaton Beach and naming it for the Keaton brothers. A family living on Beach Road in 1920 lived between two economies: the timber mills inland and the fishing coast at the end of the road. A century later, the house still stands — its original fireplace intact, later updated with a metal roof and modern siding, with a shed and utility building out back. It has been owner-occupied with a homestead exemption through the years. Homes like this don't come along often. This one has been standing for 106 years. It's ready for its next hundred.
