About this House
Extremely well-built and well-insulated, easy to heat and always cozy. The house has regular running water, double soapstone sinks in the kitchen, on-demand hot water, a deep claw-foot tub, a big fridge, root cellar, great windows and skylights, and a highly efficient woodstove. Downstairs there's a living room with vaulted ceilings and skylights, a composting "throne" room with a stained-glass window, kitchen, dining room, and office/guest-bedroom. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a claw-foot bathtub with a skylight overhead.

The land is magical. It's 262 acres, surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservation land and wildlife. Wonderful neighbors not too far down the road. Quiet, private, and stunningly beautiful. View of the ridge across the river. There's a brook that runs along the edge of the property into the Green River, which is just across the road.
We built the house in 2008 using green building techniques. It is off the grid completely, and relies on solar power during the spring, summer, and fall, and solar plus a small generator in winter. A couple cords of wood are included to get you started, and a couple more would need to be ordered. Propane hot-water on-demand, and a propane cooking stove. Washing machine (no dryer). Deep claw-foot tub underneath a skylight next to the main, loft-like master bedroom and second bedroom. Simple composting toilet system downstairs. Big, double soapstone sinks in kitchen. All wood floors. Clay-plaster walls. Incredible cabinetry made by a family member with wood from the land here.
There is a half acre garden, an acre pasture, an additional kitchen garden close to the house, a meadow, a barn, and storage sheds.
The ideal renter will be experienced with or excited to learn about homesteading and/or caring for an off-grid home, and up for the challenges of all-seasons-living on an extraordinarily beautiful hilltop.
