"The upper end of Court St ( 1A ) is a quiet row of single family homes. All these homes were built by the same contractor. from 1976-1979. My home is the last in the row and the most private being surrounded by trees. The house set backs are good. Everyone keeps their homes and yards maintained and flower gardens appear in most of the front yards. We have lived here for 4 years , met our next door neighbor twice. She works at the hospital down the street. It is a very quiet street with only early morning hospital shift change. The schools are 1 mile down the street and 1 bus goes by our house twice a day. We seldom see any people walking this section of the street because there are no sidewalks and the shoulders of the street are too soft for good footing. There is a state maintained trail for walking , snow mobiles and ATV's 1/2 mile from my house. This trail goes for miles. It was once a railroad line that has been converted into "The Sunshine Trail" I believe it is currently 88 miles long. Machias is also close to the ocean on a tidal river called the Machias River. Steeped in history, Machias will be celebrating its 250th Anniversary in 2013. A year long celebration is in the works with many events over the course of the year. It is a pristine area with clean air, blue skies and no Wal-Mart. We can drive 60 miles one way if we really need Wal-Mart, but since we have managed without Wal-Mart so far, they can stay away from Machias. We have 4 well equipped hardware stores, Small local businesses , a decent grocery store, several gas/ convenience stores, an Art Gallery/Frame Shop,2 Health food shops, food buying co-ops, organic farms ( farmer's market ) several good food eat in/take out shops, a great Wine,Craft Beer and Specialty Cheese-food shop. An old time 5 & 10. If you are looking for the quiet life close to beautiful nature and blue, blue skies. Machias ( Down East ) is the place. Do not ask for Big Box Stores- it will never happen here.
