A Truly Transformational School ExperienceBoth of my children attended this school, and I can honestly say it has been one of the greatest gifts in their development—not only academically, but as human beings. My son joined in second grade, and my daughter started in pre-K. From the beginning, this school has been a place where they were both deeply seen, supported, and encouraged to grow.When my son arrived, he was experiencing social-emotional challenges and anxiety about school. The transformation he underwent here was extraordinary. He quickly found a sense of belonging and built deep, lasting friendships. The teachers tapped into his strengths with skill, compassion, and creativity—helping him flourish both socially and academically. By the time he graduated, he was performing math at an eighth-grade level and had developed strong literacy skills. More importantly, he gained confidence, self-esteem, and tools like mindfulness and self-compassion that will serve him for life.My daughter immediately felt at home as well. She made close friends early on and was consistently engaged and inspired in her learning. She thrived in both academics and extracurriculars—especially the theatre show in 4th grade, which sparked her love of musical theater, and the Food Lab, where students learn about cooking, sustainability, and caring for others through food. Both of my kids absolutely loved that program.As a former teacher and someone who now trains educators across the country, I’ve seen a lot of schools—and I can confidently say this one is a model of what a school should be. The leadership of Principal and Superintendent Eric Gross is outstanding, and the staff are deeply committed to nurturing the whole child. One teacher in particular—my kids' sixth-grade teacher, Dallas Guerrero—is among the best I’ve seen in my entire career.This school cultivates a culture of kindness, excellence, and genuine care. It’s a place where children don’t just learn—they thrive. I’m so grateful this was the foundation for my kids’ education and growth.

Some teachers seem unmotivated and waiting to retire. Some teachers rely on group work due to large class sizes, which means the smart kids get bullied to provide answers while the other kids goof off. No accountability. Social dynamics foster exclusivity, racism, and bullying with no oversight or consequences from admin.

My son has thrived at SCHS. He is a high achieving kid and loves Math Academy and advanced science classes. The teachers have been really engaged and communicated their passion for their subject matter effectively as well as offering terrific instruction. He also likes the relative diversity of the school and how it's a community with all different kinds of people. The more vocational classes (auto, bike, ceramics, etc...) also seem excellent. Lots of different sports, theater and band, something for everyone. The principal is also amazing. I think that she goes above and beyond as a leader to foster an environment where everyone feels like they have a place and are welcomed. No school is going to be perfect for everyone all of the time, but I feel like SCHS is a great model of what a thriving public high school can be. I also really like that while my son has enough work to learn and stay engaged, he isn't drowning in homework and doesn't seem stressed the way that I know some kids are in other parts of Silicon Valley. Couldn't be happier.
