Our family has been part of the Lamar Middle School community for just over a month, and I want to acknowledge how much has improved since our initial concerns. The teachers, counselors, and many parents continue to be the highlight of our experience. They are caring, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to students’ learning and well-being.After sharing concerns about safety and bullying, I recently met with an administrator, Mr. Phelps, and counselors, Owens and Sheridan, and I could not have asked for a more compassionate and professional response. They listened carefully, addressed each issue with sincerity, and made clear commitments to supporting my daughter. Their collaboration and follow-through have helped rebuild my confidence that the school is taking these matters seriously.It’s clear that the counseling team and Mr. Phelps are working hard to ensure students feel safe, valued, and supported. I especially appreciate the warmth and respect they brought to our meeting. It reflected the best of what public education can be when respectful communication and empathy are prioritized.While every school can continue improving in areas like consistency and front office communication, our most recent experience shows that Lamar’s staff truly care and are responsive when families raise concerns. We are grateful for their time, professionalism, and commitment to student well-being.

In the past three years under the leadership of Principal Leyla Olano this school has flourished. It has been a gem of a school in north central Austin! Principal Olano recruiited some great teachers, including a number from Spain and Latin America for the Spanish language program and Chinese teachers from both Taiwan and mainland China for the Chinese language program. Discipline is firm but fair and always with a loving attitude, ensuring a safe learning environment. The facility is admittedly older (1953) but the small size of the student body ensures individual attention -- everyone knows everyone and helps out. Fantastic PTA support and lots of community activities! I don't know what the 2026-2027 school year might bring with all the changes in Austin ISD, but these past few years have seen incredible improvements and a stable staff.
