Description

Locust Valley Farm is located along Ten Rod Road in the Queen’s River Valley amid the gently rolling terrain of rural Exeter, Rhode Island. Fisherville Brook flows through the middle of the 71-acre farm flanked by woodlands and pastures sloping up to ridges to the East and Eest. Dogwood, the main residence, on 6.5 acres, is a 14 room shingle-style 1916 country house situated on a low ridge overlooking the pond to the west and rolling fields to the east. The ridge drops away at the south portion of the house exposing fieldstone walls containing a vestibule entrance from the deiveway, a large game room with fireplace, adjacent bath and an open stairway leading to the living room and screened in porch above. A gracious exterior stone stairway also leads from the driveway to a spacious stair hall at the main level above. This floor contains the living room, library, dining room, powder room, kitchen with a full butler’s pantry and 2 smaller pantries, as well as a parlor. All rooms have both East and West views and access to two screened-in porches and one open terrace. There are built-in bookcases, window benches, and four fireplaces on this level. There are 3 large bedrooms with private baths, walk-in closets and fireplaces on the next floor. One of these bedrooms has a separate parlor set off with sliding doors. Looking out to the pond is a long hallway with a cedar closet and two built-in linen shelf closets. At the north end of the floor are 2 more bedrooms with a shared bath and separate staircase originally used be a live-in staff. On the top floor are 2 generous gable attic storage rooms separated be a wonderful well lit studio with sweeping views of the fields and wooded hills beyond. It has its own bathroom and a room-size vestibule at the top of the stairway. The basement to the north of the game room contains a shop, 2 furnace rooms, 2 storage rooms, and a laundry. The grounds feature attractive landscaping and a stone terraced flower garden and patio complex. Located nearby is a 16 x 18 garden shed and a 5 car garage.
