There are some excellent teachers at PPBHS. There are also some that are just putting in their time. For students that fit the Point Beach "mold", things typically go very well. For those who are from low income families, have learning differences, or are culturally different than the majority in any way, life can be very difficult. At best they are ignored or disregarded, and worst, bullied and threatened. Overall, the problems start at the elementary school where the administration and guidance department support attitudes that foster homophobia, white superiority and nepotism. While things are better at the high school, and a serious effort is now being made to address these deep-seated prejudices, they are still about 20 years behind the more progressive districts. Bullying on the sports teams is particularly problematic. I do believe the school is trying, but local politics and parent attitudes make it a long, slow uphill battle.
