About this House

Lovely Berkeley hills home with level yard. This private, spacious early-mid-century home has views from every window.

A wooden gate off the street leads to a private, lush front yard landscaped into a Japanese-style garden with boulders and a flat grassy area. The flagstone front path and patio leads you to the updated 2,000 sq/ft 3BR+/2BA house nested behind a gingko tree and a Japanese maple.

This 1936 early mid-century home is on three levels:
The front door is on the main level. It opens to a central foyer. On the left is a large living room with two walls of small-paned windows with treetop views of the San Francisco Bay and overlooking the terraced backyard. French doors open out to the enclosed front yard and patio, joining the two spaces. There is a central wood-burning fireplace to cozy up to on chilly winter (or summer!) nights. The formal dining is in the center of the house, between the living room and kitchen. It is spacious and bright, with a wall of windows overlooking the backyard.
The newly redesigned chef's kitchen adjoins the dining room. It has plenty of upper and lower cabinets, deep stainless steel sink, goose-neck faucet, and white quartz counters, perfect for honing your kitchen skills. There's also a stainless steel Jenn-Air gas stove with hood, a fridge/freezer combo with filtered water and ice dispenser, dishwasher - and a big sunny window with bay views. To the right of the front door is a large bedroom (or office) furnished now with a couch that converts into a double bed. It overlooks the front patio and has a nice full-sized closet. This main level also has a full bath, with a relaxing vintage bath tub alongside a modern stand-up shower, jade green tile, and pedestal sink.

A flight of stairs leads to the upper level of the home, with two spacious bedrooms and a full bathroom. On the right is a large, bright master bedroom with a large closet and French door leading to a private balcony tucked in among the leaves, with views of the Bay and the Golden Gate bridge. The second bedroom is slightly smaller, with a walk-in closet and a bright corner of multi-paned windows looking out over the rear yard. Between the two is a full bath with another deep vintage soaking tub with shower.

The lower garden level is a sunny, spacious media or playroom with white painted exposed ceiling beams and hook ups for a flat screen TV. This bright, serene space could easily be turned into a 4th teen bedroom, au pair suite, workout room, or painting studio - the possibilities are endless! It has direct access to the backyard, and its own side entrance. The laundry room is also located on the garden level.

You enter the large, terraced backyard either from the stairway down to the garden level, or through a side door in the media room. The yard is slightly sloped, with two grassy areas separated by a center raised rock terrace planted with all the wonderful California fruit trees you could ask for: meyer lemon, mandarine, fig, apple, and olive - and roses too!

Now that I’ve lived in Palo Alto, Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, Manhattan—and raising my own three children in Brooklyn—it’s clear to me that this neighborhood is a uniquely special, sometimes magical, place to grow up. I wish I could move it to Brooklyn!"
