8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur family has been part of the Lamar Middle School community for just over a month, and I want to acknowledge how much has improved since our initial concerns. The teachers, counselors, and many parents continue to be the highlight of our experience. They are caring, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to students’ learning and well-being.After sharing concerns about safety and bullying, I recently met with an administrator, Mr. Phelps, and counselors, Owens and Sheridan, and I could not have asked for a more compassionate and professional response. They listened carefully, addressed each issue with sincerity, and made clear commitments to supporting my daughter. Their collaboration and follow-through have helped rebuild my confidence that the school is taking these matters seriously. It’s clear that the counseling team and Mr. Phelps are working hard to ensure students feel safe, valued, and supported. I especially appreciate the warmth and respect they brought to our meeting. It reflected the best of what public education can be when respectful communication and empathy are prioritized. While every school can continue improving in areas like consistency and front office communication, our most recent experience shows that Lamar’s staff truly care and are responsive when families raise concerns. We are grateful for their time, professionalism, and commitment to student well-being.Parent Review5mo ago19 Reviews - McCallum High School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school has been an incredible experience for our family over the past three years! We feel so supported by the principal, staff, and teachers. The strong sense of community is a real highlight, and the PTA's genuine care and continuous efforts to enhance the school – from the grounds to enrichment programs and equity initiatives – are truly appreciated. We also love the empowering leadership opportunities for the kids and the focus on kindness. We highly recommend this school!Parent Review1y ago15 Reviews - Check out schools near 505 W North Loop.

"Affordable and quiet for the most part. Gets shady as you head towards 290, very nice people, rent should stay affordable "

"North Loop is awesome. Friendly neighbors, walking distance to groceries, restaurants and bars. The best trick or treating is 10 blocks away. Love Hyde Park/ North Loop. "

"come to know others dogs by name. It's a great place to live. We have been here three years now. On the negative side, we could use more transit in the area."

"This neighborhood is very friendly and nice; everyone is always walking their dogs. The only downside is it’s a bit loud because of Koenig but it’s definitely not the noisiest of austin neighborhoods. Overall the neighborhood is safe as well, wouldn’t walk at night but that’s just because there aren’t many streetlights!"

"The streets are semi-high traffic. There's a lot of through traffic traveling between two busy streets. "

"There are very fast buses that run down Duval st. Not super safe for kids in the regard. Very quiet and dog friendly."

"It’s older and quiet and there’s lots of independent businesses (including restaurants and shops) within walking distance. There are two coffee shops that are easy to get to that I live. "

"I see people walking their dogs around all the time! And a lot of the nearby restaurants and bars are outdoor-dog-friendly. There are so many places to walk your dogs—a lot of trails, open fields, and parks. I'm not sure if there is a designated dog park nearby, though, and not all of the neighborhood streets have sidewalks."

"Dog owners will love the company of many other dog walkers on the street. Although we don't have parks or dog parks, there is a triangle of parkland that we in the neighborhood developed and maintain, where people take their dogs to play frisbee, etc."

"Its combination of students and long-term residents, as well as working-class renters, makes it unique. Plus its hip boutiques, food stands, restaurants, and bars."

"Highlights are the amazing variety of restaurants, quirky/independently owned thriving businesses, proximity to downtown, and affordable housing. The North Loop Ave drag is amazing, with all its shops, restaurants, and bars. There are so many people out and about strolling up and down North Loop all the way from Lamar."

"North Loop has an even mix of the reasons people love Austin! It's also great because you're close to all the fun areas, but without all the noise and chaos. There's a lot of nature—parks, trails, fields—plus bars, fun shops, and restaurants."

"The houses are a mix of Old Austin and new houses being built. It is easy to get onto MoPac and just 8 minutes away from the city. The area is heavily wooded and filled with deer."

"Easy, peasy. Even if MoPac is at a standstill, I can still make it into downtown Austin in 15 minutes, or I can shoot down Balcones."

"It's very easy to hop on a bus from here. I wouldn't want to drive, as traffic can get pretty bad. A lot of people drive through this neighborhood to get to major Austin streets."

"It is very safe and offers very affordable living for a place that's still close to everything in Austin! There are also schools nearby. The age demographics are very mixed, from older college/grad students to families. It's about an eight-minute drive to two different H-E-B groceries or to the Wheatsville co-op, which has organic/specialty groceries."

"The houses still have large lots from back in the '60s and '70s, and the schools are great. There's Doss, Highland Park, and Pillow Elementary. For middle school, you can choose from Murchasion and Lamar Middle School. The high schools in the area are Anderson and McCallum."

"I'm not sure why anyone would say there are sketchy areas near here - Austin is an incredibly safe city. This area is also next to one of the better high schools in Austin (none of the public high schools are particularly terrific). There is also a fair amount of stuff on North Loop, which is nice and I imagine that Highland Mall will eventually be developed thus making this area very desirable. The only downside is that the closest grocery store is one of the less nice ones and it's not all that close."

"I live near here and have a friend over here. It's close to some sketchy neighborhoods, but this is a nice pocket! It's good. I feel safe enough."
