Chesnee Elementary reflects many of the problems common in small-town school systems. In our experience, students who are well connected or from long-time local families appear to receive better classroom placement and attention, while others are overlooked.Our family is not from Spartanburg County, and our child was repeatedly placed with teachers who showed little concern for academic progress. We raised concerns multiple times and had several in-person meetings with both school principals regarding our child’s performance, particularly in math. During these meetings, we were repeatedly assured that everything was “fine” and encouraged to continue advancing our child to the next grade without question.Despite those assurances, as our child now approaches the end of elementary school, they require outside tutoring at a second-grade math level. This reflects a failure to properly assess, communicate, and address academic deficiencies early on.The school frequently contacts parents over minor behavioral issues that should reasonably be handled by classroom staff. Expecting working parents to intervene during the school day for routine discipline is unrealistic and inappropriate.Most concerning is a serious safety issue we experienced. Another student repeatedly told our child that they were going to “kill” them. The school’s response was limited to a brief conversation with the resource officer. No meaningful disciplinary action was taken, and we were not made aware of any follow-up with the other child or their parents. This lack of response to a direct threat is alarming.Overall, this school failed our child both academically and in ensuring a safe learning environment. Parents should approach with extreme caution and exhaust all other options before enrolling their child here.

Love this small town involved school! They really get behind all the students and push them to be their best.

Unfortunately the majority of the current faculty doesn't even seem to like kids. They are not engaged with the kids. This is sad going from awesome elementary school teachers to these teachers. The district really needs to review the parent surveys that were done in early 2015 as this was a common problem reported.
