High achieving school which can lead to some competition between students/families. Hard to pin all of that on the school - as it often comes from home. There are some high quality teachers here who are some of the best I've come across. Some great community nights - Multicultural Night, Dance Fest, Basket Bingo, etc that really bring the teachers/students/families together. Great neighborhood school, overall.

According to the website: Students new to DMS will be placed based on their previous math coursework and may be given a placement test to help us determine the appropriate level of Math for the student.Actually, if you move here from outside California, straight As and high standardized test scores elsewhere mean nothing. The registration office can barely provide a class schedule the day before classes start to students moving from outside the district. Expect to heavily advocate for your children, if you are new here. Lots of fighting and kids doing poorly get all the attention, while they ignore the straight A students.

Our experience with the Union middle school has been extremely positive. The principal's leadership stands out as one of the school's greatest strengths. They are highly visible, approachable, and genuinely invested in the success and well-being of every student. Their commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and academically challenging environment is evident throughout the school community.The school offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities, allowing students to explore different interests, develop new skills, and build meaningful friendships. Whether students are interested in academics, arts, leadership, technology, or athletics, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved. The choir and band programs have been exceptional and have played a significant role in my daughter's growth and confidence. She was encouraged to develop her musical talents and was given numerous opportunities to perform at school and community events. These experiences not only helped her excel musically but also provided tremendous motivation, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. The dedication of the music teachers and the variety of performance opportunities make these programs a valuable part of the school's overall educational experience.Parent engagement is another area where the school excels. This school is horrible. My son was in the hospital and missed pe for first semester and tried to make up for it for golf. It turned out that I was supposed to fill out a form to get him excused that was supposed to be filled out but was announced in first semester when he wasn’t there. Overall, this school is very discriminatory towards people that have had medical issues and please don’t send your kid there.
