Description

This magnificent mansion home has four bedroom suites on the 2nd floor and a 3-bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor. Beautiful one-of-kind features throughout of the house, and amazing craftsmanship is evident in each room. The signature design in this shingle style home is the 2-story open living hall that connects rooms on the first floor with pocket doors for versatile configurable floor plan. Spacious and bright master suite features her dressing room, his closet with built-in's, fireplace, private hallway leading to master bathroom and linen closet, and balcony overlooking completely fenced-in backyard and quiet street situated in the south-side neighborhood. Recent infrastructure upgrade made throughout the house, was true to the original architectural style and craftsmanship, design choices were focused on energy conservation. The charms from the turn of last century with updated convenience for modern day living go harmoniously together making this home dream come true!

The Shingle Style aims for the effect of a complex shape enclosed within a smooth surface, the shingle exterior, which unifies the irregular outlines of the house. This house was cited in the book of "a Field Guide to American Houses" by Virginia & Lee McAlester. The book noted that "The tower and front facade are united by the extended front wall and the upper band of windows". The Shingle Style was an unusually free-form and variable style. This great range of variation made this style remained primarily a high-fashion style of innovative architects.

This shingle style home was custom designed by a famous architect, Otis Dockstader of Elmira, NY, for Alanson B. Houghton whose family was the first resident of this house. Houghton was a successful businessman, politician, and diplomat who served as a US Congressman and Ambassador. The documented history alone makes this house priceless.
