Description

In February of 1926, two entrepreneurs R. J. Mebane and W. E. Sharpe formed a non-stock, non-profit entity that would create the Hope Valley suburb, now called Old Hope Valley. The neighborhood was designed to be a gracious community which would include modern<br />conveniences such as underground water and sewer mains, electricity, architecturally designed homes, a professional golf course, and a country club destined to become the hub of social life for the new community and for greater Durham. Because of these features and the distance from downtown, residents of the new development were promised not only a healthier lifestyle but greater longevity! To attract people to Hope Valley and to set the desired tone and standard for the homes there, Mebane and Sharpe hired Durhamn++s foremost residential architect, George Watts Carr, to design a handful of moderately sized, but richly detailed homes in the Tudor Revival and English Cottage styles. The developers desired to imbue their new neighborhood with an n++Old Englishn++ feeling, in keeping with the country lifestyle of Englandn++s leisured classes. The first ten homes were built between 1927 and 1929. They were set in large landscaped grounds on winding streets. Welcome to a 1929 masterpiece n++ a fine example of a home that is attune to its heritage. For even though there have been a series of additions and renovations over the years, none of 3936 Dover Roadn++s original charm has been lost. (Internet 5531613)

"Hope Valley is a beautiful historic neighborhood nestled around a private country club golf course. It's a supportive community and warm and welcoming. There are lots of families with young children and you often see them walking and biking throughout the neighborhood. The yards and homes are well maintained bc home owners take pride in their properties, the HOA is voluntary. Able to walk to Bull and Bean, Only Burger, the Post Office and frozen yogurt and hair salon. The public library and another shopping center anchored by Harris Teeter and CVS is a 3-minute drive outside the HV gates."
  • Annajean001
"very quiet real nice houses plenty of wild life and I think there is fishing. Close to Duke and UNC. There are other institutions of higher learning. Shopping is never far and there is lots of culture "
