Description

With roots dating to 1850, Niles was California's original Hollywood. Before movie production moved south to Los Angeles, the age of silent movies saw famous productions like the "Broncho Billy" westerns and The Tramp filmed in Niles. This town was where many of the leading actors and studio executives of the day also lived -- Charlie Chaplin, G. M. Anderson, and others. Niles was home to the famous Essanay Studios of Chicago, who opened one of their first California studios in Niles. On the site of their old studio lot now rests an accurate, fully operational silent movie theater. Niles was also a critical junction point along the Southern Pacific Railroad between San Jose and Oakland, and was the birthplace of the country's first flour mill. Today, it is a certified historic neighborhood, with dozens of antique stores, excellent restaurants, renowned street festivals and fairs that attract tens of thousands. Although a part of the City of Fremont since the city was founded in the mid-1950s, Niles is one of the few remaining quaint, historic places in the San Francisco Bay Area where everyone still knows each other and is largely untouched by modern overgrowth.

    "When you drive down the main street, it’s like going back in time. You’ll find antique stores and ice cream and the best pizza in town. There’s always something going on from car shows to garden tours. We even have a train but you can take through the canyon To the next town for a picnic."

    "Living in the bay area can be a little crazy and in this area of Fremont you will find an oasis of tranquility in this sea a craziness. Main Street has many antique shops and a growing number of great eating venues. If you forget something at the grocery store Mikey's probably carries the item. The elementary school has a great reputation and this past spring as I was walking my dog I watched the kids square dancing on the front patio of the school."
