About this House

According to the Summit Historical Society, a few grand estates were built on Summit’s Northside as ‘country homes’ during the early 1900s. Twin Beeches, like Twin Maples, now the stately Summit Fortnightly Club, was one such home. The present day Twin Beeches is a superbly finished Spanish Colonial Revival estate, an architectural tour de force, completely rebuilt in 2000 by the current owners. Their goal was to build “a new, one hundred year old house,” carefully adhering to the Spanish Colonial style as defined by noted turn of the century architect Addison Mizner, updated for modern living. The home includes the grand interior and exterior entertaining spaces typical of the Mizner designed Palm Beach and Palm Springs estates. The quality of the materials and the craftsmanship are as they would have been in times past, applied with meticulous adherence to the home’s architectural style, including: a distinctive clay barrel tile roof imported from Italy; custom exterior brickwork and limestone detailing; mahogany windows and doors; ceiling heights, millwork, and other finishes following a formal/informal hierarchy; and ceiling friezes and Venetian plaster walls in formal spaces. Privately perched on a 2.3 acre prime Northside property accessed by two driveways, this expansive estate is a rare find in Summit, and just blocks to town and New York City commuter trains.

A grand two-story, columned entrance hall with front-to-rear views, a serpentine staircase and decorative ironwork is just the beginning of the home’s extraordinary spaces and detailing. The elegant living room spans the front and rear of the home, and it features plaster ceiling friezes, custom paneling, and an oversized fireplace with decorative mantel. Two sets of French doors open from the living room to an idyllic veranda with a radiant heated limestone floor and built-in fireplace overlooking a private terrace and tiered lawns. The banquet-sized dining room also includes ceiling details, an oversized fireplace and mantel, as well as Venetian plasterwork. The formal spaces around the reception hall are completed by a unique winter garden turned conservatory with a clerestory, stately pillars, built-in bookcases, and three sets of custom curved doors that lead to the formal gardens.

The home’s first floor family spaces are anchored by a designer kitchen with island seating for eight. A distinctive tray ceiling and views of the property highlight the breakfast room which accesses the rear patio and a lower level "hidden" garden. The handsome family room is clad in custom mahogany walls, recessed lighting embedded in exposed mahogany ceiling beams, a fireplace, and a built-in media center. A fully equipped butler’s pantry, mud room and full bath add to the convenience and livability of these rooms.

The second floor is open and spacious, with a gallery and landing that overlook the foyer below. The romantic fireside master bedroom is flanked by a sitting room and office, each with different property views. Two walk-in closets connect the master dressing room. The luxury master bath features two marble-topped vanities, radiant heated marble slab floors, deep jetted tub, frameless oversized shower and separate commode. Three additional large ensuite bedrooms each boast walk-in closet areas and well-appointed full adjoining baths with linen closets. A large balcony connects to one of the bedrooms, offering panoramic vistas. A laundry center with built-ins and oversized closet is an added bonus.

Front and back staircases to the third floor access two privately set identical bedrooms, each of which includes a built-in study and day bed, and a dressing room. The ensuite baths, each with custom vanity and shower, are joined by a Jack and Jill tub room. Ample storage areas abound on this level as well.
