"the area is nice but clique-y got to be a certain way to fit in. west end is old news park Street is in, has more thriving restaurants west end has better parks "
  • Trulia User
"Not many families in this area. Mostly young couples. It is certainly safe for families but there aren’t many places for little kids to enjoy or areas to play and run free. "
  • Maisha
"Close to the farmers market, plenty of dining, and trails to run/walk either by yourself or with your family. "
  • TANYA.WOODS8
"Pricey but very a good neighborhood to live. Dog friendly, close to transportation and downtown Oakland "
  • David C.
"Great area for young professionals that work in San Francisco. Farmers markets and many restaurants and bars. "
  • Gretchen P.
"Lots of dogs in the neighborhood and a few areas where they play off leash near the marina. Lots of dogs running around having a great time. People don’t consistently pick up after their dogs around my apartment complex though, which is disappointing. "
  • Beyangolk
"Easily walk to either Lake Merritt or 12th street. 20 mins into the city. About a 15 minute walk. Very easy and tolerable if you work along the Bart line. Easy to manage a bicycle on Bart too if you work a bit further from Bart. I also love to treat myself by occasionally taking the ferry since it’s also only a 15 minute walk. "
  • Judithfong
"Weekly fair and events at Jack London Sq. are festive to walk to. The Bay trail is well maintained to walk "
  • Brett
"About a 6 minute walk to lake Merrit BART with a commute to FIDI taking about 35 minutes door to door. "
  • Maya
"Commuting is pretty easy - Close to 880 and 580 and close to Lake Merritt BART and Broadway shuttle to 12th St BART "
  • Jason
"Close to the Lake Merritt BART station as well as the Jack London Ferry Terminal. The commute to downtown San Francisco is about 35-45 mins. "
  • Pebarvia
"Dog friendly area along the waterfront path. There are folks playing with their dogs regularly behind the landing at jack London property. "
  • Traynume
"Great access to public transportation. A brief walk to Jack London Square where there are many restaurants and activities."
  • Erin M.
"Very walkable. Close to downtown Oakland. Close to Bart, Amtrak, and busses. Many restaurants to choose from. "
  • Alli T.
"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is well liked by dogs and their owners because there is a very good walking trail for dogs to walk on, with access to swimming in the Estuary. There are many dogs in the area. Wag, the animal service facility, is close by."
  • Alli T.
"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is blessed with access to both easy public transportation as well as highway access. It is a 10-minute walk to BART, and there is a free shuttle bus that runs along the Broadway corridor to get to BART as well. The ferry to Alameda and San Francisco is within walking distance. But if you need to drive, you can jump right on the highway and drive to San Francisco or San Jose/Peninsula area very easily."
  • Alli T.
"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is unique because it is a blend of residential and industrial areas that are learning to coexist peacefully. New businesses open up every month, restaurants come to the neighborhood frequently, and there are more places that serve coffee, wine, and beer than in any other area in Oakland. All this, plus picturesque views of the Oakland Estuary and the bay leading to San Francisco. The restaurants along the waterfront are top-notch. They include seafood, Italian, wood-forged pizza, and Middle Eastern restaurants, many with outdoor seating. The weather in Oakland is conducive to lazy Sunday brunches in the sunshine."
  • Alli T.
"There are not many parks in the Produce & Waterfront neighborhood, but there are some grassy areas and a walking path along the Estuary for kids to play or bike on."
  • Mitch E.
"There's lots of area to let dogs run free and plenty of other dog owners around."
  • Mitch E.
"The commute to SF is a breeze. The BART can get you into the city in 30 minutes, and there's also a ferry ride that's an option."
  • Mitch E.
"Produce & Waterfront is home to Jack London Square, which is easily the highlight of the neighborhood. Jack London Square hosts regular farmers' markets and festivals, with great food and other artisan goods. It's a casual and welcoming environment alongside a peaceful harbor. The area is quiet except for the Amtrak that runs directly through—careful not to live too close. Also, travel too far from the square and the vibe will change quickly, depending on what direction you go."
  • Mitch E.
"I lived in this area for about 6 months while I transitioned to The Bay from the Midwest. Near Jack London Square, the area had some interesting shops and decent restaurant options. Exciting bars or nightlife choices are a little further away. There's a diverse group of people living in the neighborhood and most people are quite friendly. There's homeless that set up on the sidewalks from time to time and you will encounter larger homeless communities in the area as well. I lived close to an Amtrak and frieght rail line that could be very loud at all hours of the night so I had trouble sleeping and never completely got used to the sound of the horns. Overall, I thought the area was nice relative to the rest of Oakland, but it wasn't as nice or as alive as I had hoped which prompted me to move to SF."
  • Ben D.
"The Jack London District (no one calls it the produce district) is up and coming. full of great food, entertainment, art and shopping, this is one of the most walkable areas of Oakland. close to downtown, Old Oakland, Chinatown, and just a half-hour walk to the lake. Strolling the estuary at sunset is a treat this area affords, and its free! We love living here!"
