Description

Historic circa-1857 brick home offering more than 4,000 square feet of timeless character and architectural detail. Built by
Thomas Marshall, a descendant of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, this stately residence is rich in local history and known to have hosted notable figures of its era, including visits from Abraham Lincoln. The home was later occupied by John P. St. John, former Governor of Kansas, and owned by the Gerald Moore family and other prominent citizens. This twostory residence features four bedrooms on the upper level, along with one full bathroom, a kitchenette, and a large walk-in closet. The main level offers original hardwood floors throughout and multiple living spaces, including a living room, a brick formal parlor with original double doors, a dining room with dual built-in cabinets, a family room, and two half bathrooms. Multiple original fireplaces remain throughout the home, showcasing period craftsmanship and detailing. Architectural highlights include detailed original woodwork, wainscoting, cathedral ceilings, thick brick walls, pocket doors, and a brick entry parlor with original double doors that open to the grand main staircase. A second butler’s staircase provides access to the upper level and continues to the third-floor attic, offering potential for future finished space. Exterior features include a brick driveway, ornate wrought-iron porch and railings, and a black iron fenced front yard with a gated entry. The property requires TLC and updating but presents a rare opportunity to restore and enhance a historically significant home with enduring character and potential. Windows and doors are intact and currently boarded solely to prevent unwanted access.

"Charleston is a safe place to live and raise a family. It has a small community feel but with more modern connections and convenience. If you are in school, Charelston is the home of EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, A fantastic School! Rent is high! Housing goes quick especially around the summer time.. People are very nice and approachable. All in all, I would recommend! "
  • Celeste Z.
"The town is small overall so the commute to stores/EIU is not bad. There are taxis in town and buses available too. "
  • Heather.phillips80
"❤️ I live the peace and quiet and small town love of Charleston IL. Proud to go to church and raise my kids here. "
  • Heather.phillips80
"Charleston is a Family friendly sports supporting church based community with love in the center of everything. 😁🙏🏼"
  • Andrew K.
"Bike races, festivals, and art/music events and shows. There are a ton of events involving the college that keeps the entire town running. There are college football and basketball games that are cheap also!"
  • Deborah W.
"Taxis are in the area with a phone call. Many people have cars or walk because they are so close to stores. "
  • Kdharris12
"Small farming town with a state college. Very quiet even with the college. Classic midwestern town. "
  • Heather p.
"No dog park but there are lots of sidewalks to take dogs and bike trails and hiking trails by the lake."
  • Heather p.
"Red white and blue days, small town feel in general, our church family is amazing!... community breakfasts and dinners, the town rallies for the schools and all sports activities... just a lot of love here."
  • Leekzulu
"I lived here since 2013. It’s a great community. However just like every city and town there are better areas than others. If you like small town living this is a good place to live. "
  • Kathleen O.
"We’ve lived here for a year. People are nice and friendly. Love the small town atmosphere. My son attends Eastern Illinois University"
  • Allana R.
"I’ve lived in Charleston my entire life. It’s always been a good place to live. Everyone is always so friendly. It’s great community to raise a family. "
  • Idfm96
"I have lived in the same house my entire life. I can ride my bike anywhere I need to go. The library is amazing for kids stuff. There are also multiple parks within walking distance."
  • Colton199575
"it's okay I guess not many friendly people and there's flooding and possums on. top of that lots of stuff close down early"
  • D a. C.
"Charleston is a small college town. If you live in the "center city" it is easy to walk to all of the activities at Eastern Illinois Univ which is lots of fun. There is a lovely historic district bordering the campus to the north with lovely old homes of the Victorian/Edwardian era. Between EIU campus and the historic Square downtown is all historic district. Charleston is rich with Lincoln history and college vitality. It is a safe small town, nice for families as well as students and senior citizens. The person, "Terrie" who reviewed her housing and landlord problems did not review Charleston, nor did she say where her house is located. Every town has good and bad landlords and good and bad housing. Charleston is a college town and has both. For homeowners and permanent residents, as well as students, it can be a charming, midwestern town close to St. Louis, Champaign-Urbana and the Univ. of Illinois, Terre Haute and Indianapolis, IN but while being a one-two hour drive to big cities, it is a comfy, safe place to live.
