5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageLafayette Elementary is like the beginnings of a promising food forest. It’s nowhere near its potential, because growth in some areas takes time. The school relies heavily on parent involvement (parents are watering the garden). The counselor pulls the weeds. But there are many areas where the weeds have taken over and we need 3-4 counselors for the heavy workload. Children do well here because there’s a real sense of “community”. If we see every child like our own (and not as a competitor which sadly is the nature of this country) then we become willing to activate our schools as community centers designed by the community for the community. A space where real education, empathy, and compassion take place. Your children and my children are in this world together. It is our responsibility as parents to become truly our child’s first teacher (you decide what seeds you want to plant) and hold schools, staff, and teachers accountable for planting the seeds of real education and compassion. In hopes that school staff are efficient at pulling the weeds. Parents do a lot of talking with our students (the counseling and teaching) at home. And that’s why resources for parents by the school and the school district are important. Parents need support. If you work full time and cannot volunteer your time, make time to ask questions. Make time for after work hour involvement. Children grow fast! How they grow is up to you (us). Don’t expect your child to be at grade level or proficient in reading, writing or math if you drop your child off at Lafayette for Kindergarten, then pick them up at 5th grade graduation without never having read to them, talked to them or participated in any school event! Parents, you decide how successful you want this school to be. Parents with education and resources (who live in the neighborhood) often choose other schools because they don’t think the school is “good enough” for their petunias. But research shows that students (without that advantage) in the classroom do better when peers (with educated parents) learn along side them. It’s not about competition. It’s about cooperation. And community building. For the success of our children and our community.Parent Review3y ago7 Reviews - Washington Middle School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI've been assigned to this school for about 3 weeks, and this is the most terrible school to work in. The kids are not sure what they're learning and require constant reminders of the subject material. Some students don't know how to type and they don't read any books that can help with their language. Very few kids know what they're doing, however, the majority lack proper cognitive skills and they don't take notes and they have no homework. The subjectivity of some kids is appalling and they despise certain instructors for no good reason who are trying to help them. This is an evil school and I hope people make the right choice and don't come near this school.Other Review4y ago9 Reviews - Cabrillo High School

"Diverse neighborhood and almost everyone says hello, it feels like a neighborhood where most people know each other. The only thing is fireworks May through July, waking kids and scaring pets and making it hard for tired parents. We like that everyone decorates for holidays."

"This is not the best neighborhood for children. It’s often dangerous, people speed when driving down the street, blow through stop signs, etc. I would also be scared of children walking home from school alone. "

"Dangerous at night, many transits. Wouldn't walk alone past 6pm many weird people walking near cars, homes, and streets"

"Close to freeways and close to the downtown area. We don’t walk much in the neighborhood as it oftentimes feels unsafe, especially at night. Due to a lack of parking we often use ride share apps to get around town, again, especially at night. "

"there are numerous dog owners. although I don't own a dog anymore I'd say that some people pick up their poop instead of living on people's porches"

"Pro there are a lot of dog owners in the area. Cons there isn’t enough dog parks around to let our dogs loose, not enough owners picking up after there dogs, not many housing accept dogs and high prices on pet rent and/or pet deposit. "

"I want to move out of this area. It’s a blend to whom to blame for the area being the way it is. The property owners and people renting need to come together and clean up the communities. People living in the area clean up your messes and respect where you live. Owners should take time to take care of their buildings because not everyone in the areas deserve to live under a lot of your conditions. The sanitation department should do better at aiming for the opening where the crash goes because they leave piles of trash in the streets. I’ve had my fair share of homeless admirers strolling and hanging out in front of our gate. "

"I’m close to the beach everything is in walking distance. Donut shop grocery stores public transportation. I have access to several different freeways from my location. Neighbors are friendly dogs are nice there is a school within the neighborhood as well which is a fun future. We also have a dog park within walking distance"
