Rustic home nestled up against a forested hollow in the hills of Southern Indiana. Built in 1980 as a Back to the Land homestead with passive solar design and featuring hand-hewn posts and beams recovered from a nearby barn. The house was designed for compact efficient use of space. In the center of the 1st floor is an exposed brick chimney with wood-stove, surrounded by an open common space with living room, dining room, and kitchen areas. The living room has two sliding glass doors looking out onto the front lawn.
The house incorporates a passive-solar design that takes full advantage of wintertime sunlight with plenty of glazing on the south facing elevation. A partial rock wall and a brick floor both act as heat sinks to help keep the home warm late into the day.
The landscaping in the front yard includes a flower, herb and vegetable garden spaces. A small orchard includes two apple trees, two tart cherry trees, a peach tree and Asian pear tree. A shared playground sits just beyond the orchard. A large tulip poplar holds a cantilevered tree house. On the edge of the property is a productive native persimmon tree.
Attached to the back of the house is a partially covered deck, in need of some repair but still very functional. The deck overlooks a steep hollow with a mature maple-beech forest.
