My granddaughter started Kindergarten at Carbondale Elementary and she struggled all throughout the year. The teacher gave grades higher than what she earned and pushed her through to first grade. Upon attending first grade the same was repeated. The teacher stated my granddaughter was scoring in the 50's but the teacher gave her 65-70%. The teacher was asked to have her evaluated for dyslexia but did not follow through. Four months after requesting testing, at my insistence, she was tested and she was diagnosed with dyslexia. My granddaughter floundered all throughout the first grade and my daughter asked for permission to be homeschooled through Carbondale Elementary again it took four months for this to come to fruition. When my daughter was homeschooled she excelled getting between 80-90%. On May 15 I am told that my granddaughter will be retained in the first grade because of failing standardized test scores. Carbondale Elementary only has a 28% proficiency in reading and 8% in math. Carbondale Elementary FAILED my granddaughter. My granddaughter is 7 years old and will be 8 years old in December. Carbondale wants to retain her because they dropped the ball and did not listen to my daughter as a parent, leaving her floundering in frustration because she didn't understand the subject matter and the teacher failed to get her the proper help. Anyone considering Carbondale Elementary should seriously reconsider.
