Scenic mountain vistas, and nearby parks along The Blue Ridge Parkway include Doughton Park, Julian Price Memorial Park, and Moses Cone Memorial Park. W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is a 1,470-acre flood control reservoir created along the Yadkin River. The lake provides a host of outdoor recreation activities, which include boating, camping, fishing, skiing, biking and hiking. It also is home to walking trails, along with an amphitheater located at Ft. Hamby where you can see outdoor dramas of Tom Dooley and Moonshine & Thunder, a story of Wilkes County native Junior Johnson and covers the early moonshine and racing career of this NASCAR legend.Wilkes Community College is located near U.S. 421 and N.C. 268 West in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. It serves about 14,000 students from Wilkes, Ashe and Allegheny counties offering two-year Associate of Arts Degrees in many fields, two-year college transfer programs, continuing education courses, basic skills education and training and re-training for the workforce. It also is a center for the performing arts with the Walker Center events and the host site for the world-famous Merlefest. One of the biggest annual festivals in the Southeast is the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival with more than 100,000 visitors.
