I am a teacher at this school. I have been a teacher for decades, have taught at many different schools, and with many different administrators. I am very pleased with the administration team at this school and the leadership provided by Mrs. Kelley. It all begins there to establish the culture of a school. They are impressive and involved here as administrators. They know the students, are are responsive if there is a problem in the classroom with behavior. There is not a middle school in the world that does not have students in middle school who make mistakes and do dumb things. That is part of the age of our students. I love that if a student is not behaving they will remove that student from the classroom, so everyone else can learn and the lesson can proceed. I have never worked anywhere where that has happened, and it makes a huge difference. Our principal is down to earth and supportive, and she does not micromanage. She allows teachers to teach and to do what is best for students. She has a hands-on approach to building relationships with students and personally greets every busload of students to welcome them daily and remind them to put away phones and hats etc. She is walking the halls and engaging with them. They know her and want to please her because they have a connection with her. The Josten's Renaissance Program is a huge bonus to this school and has been blooming this past year. It has created a more positive environment for all who spend their days within the walls of this school. Students, staff, & faculty (called staffulty) are all recognized for doing what they are supposed to and for improvement. They plan events for the kids and have lots of incentives for doing the right thing. This positive approach is far better than a focus on discipline and negative consequences. Everyone who comes to GMS deserves to be recognized & celebrated for good choices, improvement, and overall achievement. Effort counts & striving students who struggle are also celebrated. This matters. Some students will never be the top students in school because of their learning challenges. This system still gives those students positive recognition & celebrates their efforts to do their best in school. I can only expect the school to improve each year as this Renaissance mindset continues to grow & spread through the entire school. GMS was recognized this year at the Josten's Renaissance International Conference as a Josten's School of Distinction!

I was a Rollings Visual Arts student a LONG time ago. I tried out back in 3rd grade for 4th grade and got accepted. They took 4th grade away when I was supposed to start so I started in 1999 for 5th grade and went through 2003.The school was the COOLEST school ever. As if elementary couldn’t have gotten any better, I got to start my first year at Rollings still somewhere between both amazing worlds of elementary and middle school (they didn’t add the “Middle” til the next year). The teachers were the BEST, the number of times we got to walk out of class to support and enjoy student performances, be in one, or just go have fun at the Azalea Festival!!!I got to learn art, and my last year there my painting was put into the Gibbes Museum of Art (2003). Millennium Rollings was so much fun and I couldn’t have asked for more.

I have 2 children that attend Newington, my oldest child who has been there since K and currently is in 2nd there, and my younger one who just started K! They both love it! I could count on one hand the days where I have to actually “make” them want to get up and go to school, and it’s usually because they would rather stay curled up in their bed- and not because they don’t like their class/school.The teachers they have/had have been amazing (especially dealing with all the COVID, quarantine and virtual learning situations that have been thrown at them- with no or very little guidance on how to proceed or how to handle) even when one of their teachers got sick (unsure if it was COVID related or not) she was still on virtual the week they all were on virtual at home, you could tell she didn’t feel good, and had to take a few breaks but she pushed thru it and finished the week and taught what she had to get done for that week! Neither of my kids have ever mentioned themselves or anyone being bullied or getting picked on!My 2nd grader is reading way ahead of where he should be (I believe it’s 4th grade DRA numbers) has been doing multiplication/division since first grade- at home in his free time, he asks for hard words to spell, hard math questions to do, and extra long numbers to read out loud for fun!! I’m hoping he tested well enough to go into GATE next year! He was lucky enough that his K teacher moved to 1st along with him so we had the same GREAT teacher 2 years in a row! Unfortunately she moved upstate so my younger son won’t get the chance to have her, but his teacher and her assistant this year are just as great!! They have patience with their students I could only dream of having one day!! I was for sure my youngest was going to be a tough one- mostly to get him to focus and hold his attention long enough in the classroom, and it would be a struggle to make him do “extra” work at home- but he has almost finished all his sight words he needs to know by the end of the year ( with 4 months left) the ones he practices every night- he can do it in record speed!! He is reading whole Pete the cat books each night, and pretty quickly! And just got Terrific kid of the month! So very proud of him!! So our experience at this school so far has been great and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon! But I know everyone’s will be different depending on needs, wants, and expectations - and it will be that way everywhere you go!

This school is extremely nasty. There are roaches everywhere. The custodians and janitors don’t even do a good job at cleaning the bathrooms. The staff locks most of the bathrooms which means you’ll have to go to another bathroom in a whole different hall. They stopped giving paper towels and brought in hand dryers that nobody asked for and it’s dirtier than using paper towels but they bought a brand new sink nobody asked for. The lunches are not even good and they made the cafeteria the only place where they have different menu items than the lines around the school. In the cafeteria they made it only one line which you’d have to wait in and it has so many students. I don’t see the point in having one line for the whole cafeteria where people cut you. You have to send a smartpass (electronic pass) to be able to go to the bathroom which is stupid because the district pays for that when they could spend zero dollars just having students make a paper pass. The teachers aren’t even looking at their computers half of the time so you’re going to have to ask them anyways. Also for the smartpass one student is allowed out at a time which is also stupid. This school also constantly stinks and it’s way too overcrowded.
