About this House

Beautiful history and magnificent botanic specimens come together at this 1903 Foursquare residence on a rare 1.85 acre lot in historic Aiken. For 50 years this property has been the home to a renowned native plant nursery. The level lot was ideal for nursery beds and greenhouses, and the charming residence served as the business office. Today, the gardens and grounds still display unique trees and flowering shrubs, including wild azaleas, camellias, and bigleaf magnolia.

In the 19th century, the land was part of Crossways Plantation. As Aiken's stylish Winter Colony grew, that historic farm was divided and sold , making way for an array of homes that now present the trends and styles of the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties.

1128 is an American Foursquare: a two-story house with a square floor plan that includes four rooms on the ground level and four rooms on the second story. In the 1970's, the owners' parents added a greenhouse, a family room, and a cold frame.

Guests are greeted in a large foyer with fireplace. The charm of high ceilings and wood floors distinguishes the interior of the house. Some rooms feature outstanding wood fireplace mantles and tile hearths. A large pass-through between the kitchen and the sitting room brings light and warmth to the rooms. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large service suite with laundry and a full bathroom.

The second floor has four bedrooms and one bathroom. The owners have designs for converting two of the bedrooms into a master suite with private bathroom and walk-in closet.

There is a cellar that originally served as a boiler room.

The location in Aiken's Historic Overlay District is desirable. Quiet streets with wide landscaped medians add privacy on two sides of the property. These greenways feature magnificent ancient oaks. The Overlay District rules offer protection and cohesion to the neighborhood, but also allow for alterations and subdivisions to properties.
