"It’s a 45-minute drive to any supermarket, doctor or hospital, hardware store, anything. There’s a gas station, post office, and small minimart within 30 minutes. "
    • Cathy T.
"Generally, the wild and scenic Klickitat River Canyon area, about 30 miles long, from the river headwaters at the base of Mt. Adams to where it flows into the mighty Columbia River about 45 miles downstream below, is located along the largest free flowing river in Washington State, and is home to very few full time human residents but is an excellent place for deer, elk and wild turkey hunting, world class fly fishing for salmon, steelhead and trout, and is perfect for white water rafting and kayaking as well. The little town of Klickitat is located halfway up the canyon where it was originally settled as an Indian village even before the Lewis and Clark days and later became home to the J Niels Lumber Co circa 1910 or so which later became Champion Lumber Co, operating full time until the early 1990's when the mill closed down for good. There are still about 400 full time residents and 180 homes in Klickitat, with a post office, gas station/store, a small grocery store, a great steakhouse restaurant/bar (Huntington's) that patrons drive for miles to reach and an excellent K-12 school system. Outlying residences nearby up and down the canyon from the town of Klickitat range from small cabins to large estates, from 1 acre parcels to several hundred acre tracts and the corresponding property values fluctuate as a result. Nearly all the homes in the small town are older, most of them built in the 1930s to 1970s era, very few manufactured homes and the average value for all the homes in town is below $100K. Many of them were originally solidly built by the mill owners to house their employees. The homes are generally small, about 1200 sq ft or less and typically 2-3 bedroom, 1 bath homes on 50 x 100 ft lots. The Klickitat River flows through the little town with a pleasant low bank area for easy access. Riverfront homes are more valuable, but also have flood concerns. It's a 20-30 min drive to anywhere from here, so medical needs and emergencies can be a concern."
