    Description

The owner acknowledges Hump Island is on Tlingit land and appreciates their stewardship and respect for this special place over the generations. "Claimed" by Russia and then transferred to the United States by the Russians in 1867, the island was then homesteaded as a fox farm in the 1920's and 30's. Hump Island encompasses 150.35 acres with nearly 2 miles of ocean shoreline according to the US Survey. The shoreline includes a large gravel beach on the East side, a smaller pebble beach on the West side and cliffs and rocky beaches for the remainder of the shoreline. A Piper Cub once landed on the large gravel beach. The interior includes rolling and level areas with the highest elevation estimated to be 180 feet at the hump. The land is forested primarily with spruce and hemlock with a spongy meadow and small ponds in the middle of the island. Blueberry bushes are prevalent throughout the island. Fauna includes frequent sightings of humpback whales, and harbor seals, as well as orca whales, sea lions, river otters, eagles, ravens, Canada geese, oystercatchers, and rufus hummingbirds. Harbor seals use the island as a haulout providing opportunities for patient observation of their behavior. The island is far enough away to feel truly remote, enjoy solitude and privacy but not so far away that it takes all day to get there. The possibilities and potential of this one of a kind property are many and may include non profit uses such as, promoting spiritual and holistic growth, recreation, culture and tradition, stewardship, and education. For profit uses may include joining with family and friends to form an association making the purchase affordable for all.

"Neighbors stop to talk to each other, even helping to snowblow berms. Bon fires are also popular. Block garage sales."
    • Karen E.
"Great 4th of July celebrations; spring folk festival; spring king fishing tournament and late summer salmon derby; Friday art gallery walks; after Thanksgiving we have a Gallery Walk to kick off the holiday season; Duck Derby spring event sponsored by Rotary Club; winter down hill and cross country skiing; lots of hiking trails; forest service cabins for rent; in-door and outdoor city league sports."
    • Stephanie T.
"Public transportation is very easy to get to and goes to popular places so if it’s needed anyone can use it"
    • Stephanie T.
"Living in Douglas makes using the public bus very easy and preferable over driving to downtown. Capital transit is great in my area and buses run every 30 minutes "
    • Kelsey C.
"Juneau has terrible dog owners and it is not a good place for dogs. limited areas and everyone flocks to them without leashes. Great place if you are single or a couple without animals and love to hike."
    • Chastityvwilson
"We have great schools and many childcare options in the neighborhood. This is a very pet friendly community."
    • Eric U.
"Great public transportation. Commute isn't bad from the valley to downtown if you can avoid the school zones. "
    • Cassandra O.
"Great trails and recreational beaches close by. Great area for dogs of all sizes. Very pet friendly neighborhood. "
    • Dezzy375
"I live 3.3 miles from work. It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to work. I’m a little spoiled here. "
    • Nate W.
"From my door to my desk at work is about 20 minutes. Light traffic is typical on the way to work. Our version of traffic is when you have to check your blind spots for other cars. "
    • Dezzy375
"Dog owners may not like that bears roam around the neighborhood during the summer. However, this is a dog friendly neighborhood. "
    • Jessica R.
"Juneau as a whole feels like a giant community. We have tons of events and adventures, especially in the summer. Bacon fest, maritime festival, hiking, wildlife to name a few. "
    • Fiery Dailyvlogs
"The HubCity of Southeast Alaska. Smallest Costco in America. Huge support for students of all ages. High prices due to reliance of barges"
    • Jonlong27
"Dog owners would like the large amount of trails present in the area. There is also Cope Park near the downtown area where you can let your dog(s ) run free and get some exercise. Many people also take their dogs to the Mendenhall Glacier which has some pretty stunning scenery that never really seems to get old. Dog owners would not like the immense amount of retail listed that is NOT pet friendly (many leases do not allow pets in the Juneau area for two main reasons : increased probability of property damage and allergies within multi-domicile buildings). For this reason, finding an adequate home for you and your animals can be prove to be difficult In Juneau."
    • Dezzy375
"You have to watch out for bears and wolves. There are plenty of bad dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs. This is a dog friendly town. "
    • Belle0019
"lots of people have dogs, lots of landlords do not allow dogs. people have had to move away to other states because of it. many dogs off leash wether friendly or not."
    • Michelle H.
"It’s set apart from Juneau and has a small town feel. The view of the city lights from this side of town is stunning. "
    • Bjrettinger
"It'srelatively drug/crine free. Located within 1 mile of 4 Public schools, the post office. shopping. etc."
    • Bjrettinger
"the variety of characters, the limited interaction with park owners. the less than steller road maintenance - we need asphalt. It's quiet, and convenient. "
    • Skdsme
"Good neighbors. Close to public lands for hiking, walking dogs. Housing is not as as expensive as downtown. "
    • Michelle H.
"It’s the quaint side of town. Small, friendly feel. Awesome view of the water, mountains and cruise ships coming and going. "
    • Annice F.
"kids still play outside even if it's raining or snowing. you can see bears and eagles. people watch for each other"
    • kitty
"It's ridiculously overpriced and although some homes are beautiful, historical with awesome views, many of the affordable ones are cheap trailer crap because it's all anyone can afford"
