What Locals Say about Vallejo

"There’s many dog owners who walk their dogs day in and day out. Everyone enjoys the walks around our neighborhood. It’s safe and every neighborhood connects to each other which makes it easier to get around by foot."

"Drive in to Napa is fine. Neighbors we’ve met are all nice. There is a bit of roughness here and there, but for the most part it’s a good neighborhood. "

"Currently there are many explosions in fireworks and the neighborhood that echo through the night. I am sure that most animals are pretty scared although our cats seemed just fine with it"

"Great quite neighborhood.. many places to dine and shop at. 5 min drive to stores and movies. Benicia is 10 min away as well as 4 trails to walk at. Great place to raise kids."

"There are a lot of dogs in this neighborhood, and the school has a large field to take your dog. My only issue with this area is there are quite a few drug dealers and users that will harass you if you take your dog to said field. Really the next option is going to Curtola (5 minute drive, 30 minute walk). So, hopefully you have a car so you can find a dog park that is a 20 minute drive away. "

"Decent suburb of Vallejo, good place to raise children, but the schools need a slight upgrade, very low scores and little financing that goes towards them. "

"Friendly neighbors, however not much to do activities for parents with babies/kids. There’s no malls here in the city or great restaurants. You have general grocery stores but nothing special that stands out. Vallejo has so much potential, just taking a long time for them to grow or change it for the better."

"I was apprehensive about this area at first but since moving here, my neighbors have all come over to introduce themselves with kindness and most of them have lived here 10+ years and are hopeful for a positive change in the neighborhood. There are definite bad pockets to Vallejo. I've heard from other residents of regular gunshot noises 5-8 blocks from my home. Luckily my block is relatively quiet. Aside from the busy street sounds during the day and the occasional siren, it's mellow and drama free. My neighbors said that there were renters a couple years ago that were a wreck to the neighborhood but since their eviction, the block has been more or less safe. I would strongly advise against leaving valuables in the car and always lock the doors and keep windows closed when leaving home but to me, that's safety 101 - never leave anything for temptation. There is always someone in need, looking for an easy target almost no matter where you go in the bay area."

"We just moved a year ago to Vallejo and LOVE it! Our neighbors are very friendly (they always say hi and often stop to chat, they bring our garbage cans back when we forget, they watch our pets when we’re on vacation etc) and everyone takes good care of their houses and yards. We used to live in San Francisco and know that Vallejo has a bad rap but I think the sketchy parts are really only limited to small areas (we don’t even know which ones are not good, we haven’t seen any areas that are that bad and it’s definitely way better than so many areas in San Francisco, like the Mission and the Tenderloin!) We’re in our late twenties and love the proximity to Napa to go wine tasting with friends. The weather is out of this world, it’s pretty much always sunny, warmer than San Francisco but a lot less hot during Summer than the East Bay or Napa. Plants grow very well thanks to this weather (we have fruits trees and just planted a ton of vegetables, which are doing amazing). All in all, we love Vallejo because of its diversity and community, weather, proximity to wine country and to San Francisco, and so many more reasons. We couldn’t have found a better place to live and believe that Vallejo is a hidden gem of Northern California. Not surprising why it was so hard to find a house here and that prices keep going up! Hope this helps anyone considering to move to Vallejo! :)"

"Vallejo is a great place to live for many of the same reasons the Navy picked this location from all the west coast. Perfect weather. Secure water. Great transportation. We looked all over the Bay and thought Vallejo offered the best value and potential. Pres-school and Grammar schools are really good. High school and middle schools are the largest drawback; they both have issues. However, most folks don't know Vallejo has TWO universities, and both are expanding and investing locally into the education infrastructure. Another drawback is city government, though that is slowly improving. Some of the west and north neighborhoods are poor with too much black on black crime. Local jobs are moderate; the town is well situated for transport to jobs in the bay or sacto. The soil is terrible clay, needs major ammendments to grow vegetables. However the weather more than makes up for that with year roung growing season. Architecture is outstanding, many victorians, craftsman, ranchers etc. Homes were built exceedingly well between 1890 and 1970, beggining to tail off after that. Most of downtown has termites but they are kept at bay with annual treatment. Take a closer look, worth the time and investment for sure. Good Luck."
