East Orange, New Jersey – $150,000
Known as the “crossroads of New Jersey,” some might flock to East Orange for its close proximity to other cities. It abuts Newark, New York City is a half-hour away, and major highways and transit lines converge here for easy travel elsewhere. But East Orange has plenty to offer within its own boundaries as well. Affordable housing is plentiful here. Delicious cuisine abounds as well, with unfussy options emphasizing Southern and Caribbean cooking. Try the Hawaiian wings at Lite and Soul Eatery, or the aptly named Caribbean spot Spice N Thing. “Spice is a factor, and they are not shy about it,” says one Yelp reviewer.
This colonial home offers plenty of space, with four bedrooms, 2,200 square feet of living space, a 4,400-square-foot lot—and the potential to add another two bedrooms in the attic. Though it’s very much in a residential neighborhood, it’s perfect for an outdoorsy family, with ample natural light, a lovely sunroom, and a beautiful back patio.
Bomber Heights in Fort Worth, Texas – $185,000
Fort Worth‘s tiny Bomber Heights neighborhood is one of many older neighborhoods that residents are turning to for affordable housing as interest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area continues to grow. Ninety-five percent of neighbors on What Locals Say agree that yards are well-kept here, and 90% say it’s dog-friendly. In fact, as one dog owner and resident1 points out, Metro Animals Pet Wash and Z Boaz Dog Park are both just a block from the neighborhood’s northern edge. You’ll also find a couple of unique culinary options, including Pulido’s Mexican Restaurant and Edelweiss German Restaurant, where authentic live German music and dancing accompany the food.
It was built in 1950, but a recent remodel makes this ranch home a thoroughly modern dream. We love the spacious, elegantly furnished kitchen and the wood-paneled bedroom and den.
Flatlands in Brooklyn, New York – $799,999
Summing up numerous residents’ feelings, What Locals Say users describe Flatlands as friendly. Neighbors agree that residents here keep an eye out for each other and keep in touch through block fairs, outdoor movie nights, and concerts. Transportation issues are a breeze as well, especially by NYC standards. One resident says parking is “easy to find,”2 and numerous residents praise the ease of access to bus routes. And with numerous grocery stores, diverse restaurants and bars, and other shopping options, you can find everything you need without leaving the neighborhood.
This spacious brick two-family home is the perfect place to call home in Flatlands. It sports gorgeous hardwood floors in the living areas, and its decorative outer wall/fence adds to its charmingly old-fashioned aesthetic.
Clifton, New Jersey – $315,000
In many ways, Clifton is the ultimate suburb. It borders upscale Montclair, New Jersey, and is just 45 minutes from New York City by car or public transit. But it skirts its neighbors’ sky-high housing prices while also offering a rich, attractive community of its own. Amenities abound here, ranging from the movie theater and major chain stores at the Clifton Commons Shopping Center to the many local businesses, including the legendary Rutt’s Hut (recognized by the website The Daily Meal as having the best hot dog in the nation). Neighbors also love the sense of community and diversity in their town. “I tell my friends and family in New York, ‘You’ve got to check out this place,’” resident Jason Chuon told the New York Times.

East Meadow, New York – $400,000
The Long Island hamlet of East Meadow has been home to famous figures including Eleanor Roosevelt and Criss Angell, as well as major corporations like Lufthansa and Scrapple. It’s easy to see why—East Meadow is just an hour’s drive from New York City, but it also has plenty to keep residents busy right at home. Eisenhower Park is packed with activities, including three 18-hole golf courses, 14 softball fields, and public events including concerts and international nights celebrating world cultures. Plus the Nassau University Medical Center is in town, and Hofstra University is just a few minutes’ drive away. And diverse dining options range from Persian cuisine at Sufiya’s Grill to Margaritas Cafe, a Mexican joint that started here and became so popular that it now has nine Long Island locations.

Midway Manor in Allentown, Pennsylvania – $169,900
The latest issue of Midway Manor‘s community newsletter, Vibes, opens by commending residents for shoveling each other’s walks and checking on elderly neighbors over the winter. “That’s what Midway Manor is all about—watching out and taking care of each other,” writes Midway Manor Community Association president David Tagg. The neighborhood is barely a half-mile across at its longest end, but its community is undoubtedly tight-knit. For a variety of big-city attractions, downtown Allentown is just a few minutes’ drive away. The city is where the Liberty Bell was hidden from the British during the Revolutionary War, and a replica of the bell can be seen at the Liberty Bell Museum.
