What Locals Say about Vashon

  • Terri
"We have a lot of dog walker here. Nice areas to walk your little dogs on a lease to be safe from predators. "
  • Terri
"Nice place to walk our little dogs on a leash. This is a pet friendly community. We have dog walkers all day long. "
  • Terri
"Close walking distance to town. Friendly neighborhood. Nice place to take a stroll around town for daily walks with your dogs and children. Close enough to town that when the power goes out it only out for a short time because we are on that power line that gets there power turned back on soon due to same line as the stores. "
  • Madartsf
"Vashon is the best kept secret in the greater Seattle area! Perfect for families, absolutely the safest place in the nation, and a great community with that laid back island vibe. "
  • Susieredhead55
"The neighbors are great and it is a safe , crime free neighborhood. The park, trails, and golf course are close by. The schools are excellent. Piano Row is a historic area. The houses were built for the workers in the shipyard in 1890s and the first sidewalk on Vashon is on our street."
  • Susieredhead55
"Great neighbors, Dockton Park and walking trails near by, great schools, no crime, rural and small town living with a ferry ride to Tacoma or Seattle, artistic community...we love it here."
  • Pat C.
"I've lived her since May of 2007 and enjoy the quiet. It is not a good neighborhood for children. There is no place to play. "
  • Karen C.
"One of the biggest mistakes of my life was to leave Vashon! The air is SO incredibly fresh. Someone said there is a vortex around the island that causes this, but all the trees certainly product oxygen galore. The town is both quaint and modern. Seattle's Best Coffee was here and there is a coffee shop with their roaster where people stop and gather on the big front porch that spans the building, The supermarket has everything you could want - from basics to exotic delicacies. There are several hardware stores. The parks are great and the library is expanding to a large new facility. I wonder if anyone has done a demographic study verifying my theory that there are more people on Vashon who live to be 90+. It is safe. People are friendly. There are specialty shops in town and art studios all around the islands. There are actually two islands here, Vashon and Maury. They are connected by a small strip of land and you drive from one to the other without even knowing. If you love peace, safety, art, and scenic beauty, this is the place for you. Students commute from the mainland by ferry to school here. There is a ferry at the south end going to Tacoma, and a ferry at the north end going to Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula. There is also a passenger ferry that goes from the north end to downtown Seattle. I was very ill many years ago, and when I went to stay on Vashon again, the fresh clean air restored my health. It is a quiet life, no wild nightclubs and huge theatres, but there are many restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, specialty shops, and it is home to artists (some famous ones too) that have several special weekends where they open their studios to the public. There are art galleries, a movie theatre, and local stage performances and music performances. There is an active senior center. There are several pools and swimming in Puget Sound. There is a marina. I love it on Vashon!"
