What Locals Say about North and East

"Mostly quiet, lots of cute houses, very diverse (age, race, household size, income) and overall great area. On street parking is usually not a problem but the streets got a bit crowded recently. Many long-term residents and owner occupied homes. Budding local business scene. good grocery, food, drink options nearby. walkable and easily bike-able to BART. "

"We have a brand new elementary school in the neighborhood; Michelle Obama Elementary. It’s very walkable and not far from the popular Solano Playlot. "

"I don’t have kids so I’m probably not the best person to ask this question. Seems like a good place to grow up; I know a couple of kids here who have gotten to the age where they are parents."

"My extended family have lived in this neighborhood for over a half century. While its semi-dense and urban it is comfortable and full of pleasant surprises."

"The neighbors have known each other for generations. Our children grew up together and we all watch out for each other. Crime in this area has always been significantly lower than surrounding areas and we truly have that community feel here. It is a quiet neighborhood where people enjoy walking with their families and pets and we even know each other's pets by name and we look out for them as well. I would choose N/E Richmond over Berkeley or Oakland any day. - 35 yr res."

"is a nice area in the day time, but at night there is burglaries and car thief you cant make a honest living because there is always someone watching what you bring in or out of your home car truck ..is sad but true."

"This part of Richmond is an old family neighborhood. It's clean, friendly, and diverse. People go out in the evening to walk, and tend to stop and chat with each other frequently. There's a good park near my house for kids, and many restaurants within a few minutes drive. Our neighborhood group is very active and focused on traffic calming strategies wherever needed. I've noticed lots of people in this area are writers, artists and teachers, who seem to be looking for a more bohemian lifestyle, reminds me of what Berkeley was like in the 60's. It's super racially diverse with 1/3 each Asian, Hispanic, and White (European). Public transportation is tops - you have Bart, Amtrak, and soon to be high speed rail all at the Richmond station. Cons would be the unimpressive local schools and the need to use private schools- which there are several of fairly close by. Also the lack of boutiquey flavor - you have to take Carlson to Albany/Solano area to get that. I don't do 'nightlife' but I think there are some interesting places in Richmond not too far away, such as the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts which is a fabulous venue for serious talent in the east bay.
