good question. Having lived here for most of my life I would say there are several benefits including:
. quiet neighborhood
. sense of community
. a nice street filled with all kinds of shops
. convenient access to all major freeways
. stable house values
. decent schools
. short commute to nearby malls, zoo, and beach
. pleasant spirit to the neighborhood
Hope that helps,

Having lived in and around the West Portal neighborhood I can't say there are any huge drawbacks, but if I had to pick one or two I would have to go with weather and parking. Since WP is west of twin peaks the area sees a lot more fog throughout the year. Parking can be a little tough as well, especially on West Portal itself and the one or two blocks around the main strip. Other than that I would say I have enjoyed living and working in this neighborhood for many years. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Take care.

West Portal is one of the nicest neighborhoods in San Francisco and the market conditions currently are high demand and low supply. That being said in general the areas home values are increasing over the long run and location location location apply to West Portal. There are many fun things to do in the area including restaurants, movie theaters, cafes, shopping, parks. One of the main Muni Stations is also here which connects the neighborhood quickly to the rest of San Francisco.
If you have any questions or would like to buy or sell a home in West Portal please call me anytime.
