I recommend that you go to the town hall and ask if the home is zoned multifamily. If you don't have smoke/carbon alarm and don't wish to move, invest in one from a hardware store. At least this will help you not worry about fire/carbon monoxide. Protect yourself if the landlord does not.
Also get a hold of Tenant/Landlord book. Consult Fair Housing. Good luck. This is my opinion, always consult a lawyer for legal advise.

You have to review your lease (if you have one). 30 days notice is probably all that is necessary.If you are living in the unit you do have to pay rent.
