There is always some risk and I would suggest if you find another home to purchase, make the offer to purchase contingent upon the sale of your existing home. If you produced the signed contract along with your offer, I am sure the sellers would be more likely to accept a contingent offer.
In my opinion, the safest time to think about signing a contract would be after the buyer of your home has removed all of their contingencies. However, there is always the chance that the deal will not close.
