When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.
Well, i'm not a general contractor or a home inspector, but I'd have to answer no on this one. I have many very happy clients whose home inspections went well, not that items weren't on the report, but nothing alarming. Were the issues you're finding attributed to poor construction and/or can they reasonably be corrected? The neighborhood is well established enough now that some issues may be more likely relative to their age or products no longer used in present day construction. How well a home owner maintains/services the home can play a large part too. I'm sorry you've had that experience and hope this has helped!
