Each part of Los Angeles is very very different. If there is a specific area in Los Angeles you are referring to, I would suggest you contact the local police department and ask about that zip code or just do a google search about crime in that zip code.
Please let me know if you have any other real estate related needs or questions!

While an understandable question, Realtors are limited about what they can say regarding neighborhoods.
The best source I've found for safety information is http://www.crimemapping.com. Here you can plug in any neighborhood or address that you want information about...it's very helpful.

Instead of Monterey Hills, and if safety is a concern, you might want to think about purchasing a condo in the Pasadena area, as there are some nice places & great values. Also, there is a large police presence in Pasadena and is a much safer area then Highland Park - I walk around there all the time at night & feel very safe. Plus you have the convenience of having many shops, restaurants & stores within in walking distance living near Old Town Pasadena. If you need any help scoping out a place, I'm an agent with Coldwell Banker & live in Eagle Rock - I'd be happy to help you out & answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to give me a call at 323-810-7976 or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thanks, have a good night!

The best place to ask about crime statistics is the City Of Los Angeles, Police Department in the area you are considering.
I am unfamiliar with that part of Los Angeles and am unable to tell you which precint to check. However, you can all Parker Center downtown and they wil be able to tell you whom to contact.
When looking at statistics it is important to consider what the neighborhood is like.
For example, in Westwood the crime statistics are very different when comparing east and west of Westwood Boulevard.
The east side is mostly single family homes while the west side is apartments and condos. The incidents of car breakins is higher on the west side and can be attributed to the higher density. And it being "studentsville" is also a factor. College students tend to be less careful about what is going on around them.
Hope this helps!... more
