I live in Center Square, and have for the last 7 years. There is no other area rich in historic homes that is safer. But there are a few other nice historic neighborhoods, that you should consider. Ten Broeck Triangle, is an up and coming neighborhood with great homes and many young, committed home owners. I summarized the various downtown neighborhoods here in a recent blog post. http://www.monticellonys.com/2012/general/center-square-albany-neighborhoods
If you want an objective measure of safety, you can look at the City of Albany Police Department Crime mapping data. This information is updated every Wednesday. http://albanyny.gov/Government/Departments/Police/cmapping/maps.aspx
Finally, you can search for other historic downtown homes on my website. Unfortunately, Trulia doesn't always have the most recent listings, some have sold or expired. My website pulls listings directly from the Capital Region Multiple Listing Service (MLS). So the townhouse listings on my website will be as current and accurate as the Capital Region MLS. http://search.monticellonys.com/i/12856/results.php?savedName=Center_Square_SF&per=10&start=11

Might I suggest going to one of the local news stations & newspapers websites. The local news paper is the TimesUnion.com and one of the local news stations is WNYT.com You could also research the town website.... more
It's pretty easy to get crime and other statistics about a neighborhood. For example, you can visit my community reports website at http://www.topmarketer.net/CSR/CSReport.aspx?P18F36K1CJQE and put in zip code 12210 to pull up a lot of population information. You can also visit other sites such as the fbi site to get general crime statistics as well. And Trulia does a decent job with statistics about a region as well - http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Albany-New_York/ - hope this helps, we are restricted by fair housing laws to give personal opinions about neighborhoods, so you might not get any direct answers :)... more
