There is no perfect time to become a real estate agent. As with any profession, those that work hard and get the training are the ones that survive. When you first start out, make sure you have at least a year's savings to live on. That does not necessarily mean that it will take a year for you to earn anything. It will, though, take you time to get an income, depending on how much time you dedicate to working. If you are a go getter, it may come to you quicker.
As far as an on-line 60 hour real estate course, I do know of an agent that took it and passed the license exam first time around. I do suggest taking a classroom course. At least in the classroom you are able to ask questions and get others feedback, including the instructor's. I personally found the classroom courses more beneficial than I would have an on-line course. (I have taken on-line courses so I am familiar with them.)
If you do decide to persue real estate as a career, interview with several real estate brokerages to find out which one would be a good fit for you. You should feel comfortable wherever you decide to hang your license.
