Unless the kids are handy and fully excited about the fixer, forget about it. The "good" the parents may be doing by buying will be undone by the work and headaches involved with a fixer. Home ownership & maintenance alone may be a big enough challenge for them especially while adjusting to married life.
If they like the idea, are fully committed to it and can afford the time, research and funds necessary to do the work they may benefit from the fixer.... more
