Hi Lilly there's not as many foreclosure homes as there were a few short years ago, the market here in San Mateo is very short of inventory as well. It may be easier to contact an agent here to find a home that is appropriate for you. A 3 bedroom home in San Mateo for 550K and under may be a challenge. Please do contact me directly, I have most of my sales in San Mateo and surrounding areas.

As Steve mentioned be sure to look at the types of crimes. Often areas near schools will have a high number of crimes because parents want the police to strictly enforce traffic laws.
What would be most beneficial though is to encourage your son to take action. He should contact his neighbors and let them know he was robbed and encourage them to report any suspicious activity. If out of area thieves have targeted the area, vigilance will persuade them to go elsewhere. If it is a local resident, enough people watching will get him caught.

I have personally toured these units and they show beautiful. However, if I was your agent I would advise you to explore other options. First of all the elementary school has a very low API and secondly you live on the freeway. Granite counter tops and shiny hardwood floors will come and go out of style, but you can never move your location. I personally live fairly close to these units in the Parkside area of San Mateo and can tell you for your money there is better long term value out there. A lot of San Mateoan's view the Shoreview area as one of the worst in San Mateo, personally I don't. There are good pockets in Shoreview, but not on the freeway. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone, I know the area very well.
