This is a very family oriented neighborhood. Kids are constantly playing outside with friends in the neighborhood, and all of the parents keep on eye on the children. There are kids of all ages (ours are 7 and 10, and they have quite a few friends in a one block radius.
A couple of examples of the family focus...every year on Halloween, the kids meet at the gym in town and have a costume contest; there are at least a hundred kids that show up there (even though the town only has 1400 people) prior to trick or treating. Vacation bible school in the summer, same thing. The kids walk from the church to the fire station and sing a song they learned at VBS, then the community listens to a band play, eats hot dogs and sweet corn, and hang out with each other until the fireworks start.... more
